I was driving home from Hereford today, doing 70(ish) in OD 4th, pulling about 3000 in my sprint. The overdrive drops out, and so I slow down to 60. I try the overdrive again, and it eventually engages after about 20 seconds, only to cut out again after a couple of minutes. I try again, and it gradually gets worse until the overdrive stops working completely. I finish the trip without overdrive.
As I pull off the motorway, and depress the clutch to change down, I get a nasty rumbling howl from somewhere in the drivetrain (not the engine, although I guess it might have been the rear axle). As I wind my way back to my house it gets worse and worse.
I've got my car back up on my steeply sloping driveway, and I'm anticipating calling the breakdown people next wek for another trip to the garage. A couple of things...

1)Does this sound like the gearbox?

2)Is it due to a chronicly low oil level?

I think I killed my gearbox...
