Investigating noises in the transmission

Well, just got VCA back with the new gearbox and I STILL have the same intermittent tinny, clanking noise coming from underneath!

Could it be any of the following:

1. Wheel bearings
2. prop
3. Diff
4. Suspension
5. Air threshener

As anybody had any problems with the above which might give the same symptons? It only happens in drive.

HELP!

The exhust bouncing around and clattering on bodywork?? Check your exhaust mounts. I'm probably wrong, but think that's the problem with mine after spending AGES trying to track it down.
Good point..... though the sound is more tinny and it only happens in drive. Surely there would be a dull 'phud' at standstill if the exhaust was 'bouncing'???

I'll check anyroad.

Just been examining the old box and there was oil oozing from every orrifice........ <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Did u take of the converter as u did the box?
I'd have a look for scraping marks on the back of the converter thru the starter motor hole. A loose end plate bolt or converter bolt may be causing it.

I didn't actually do the work so I couldn't say. I'm sure the garage would have mentioned something of the sort if a bolt was loose.

I also get the niose if I go over a bump too!

I think it's your exhaust somewhere in the vicinity of the gearbox or rear axle
at mine, and reckon it could well be that. It is fine when just sitting there, but when you move off or go over rough roads (lot round here) it does bounce and clatter. Quick job to test the mounts.

1) Check that you can still see them.
2) Wiggle the back of the exhaust and see if it moves much / rattles about.
3) Replace rubber mounts as required.

If it isn't this, do let us know!!
I have got a standard box on at the moment, so I'll do the checks and report.

I hope it is this! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">

i get this problem while driving around at normal speeds but when i wheelspin i gets really bad.
i found it was the exhaust hitting the diff so i would say, get the back end in the air and check how close they are on yours.
a few of my mates had this problem in various cars (escorts, kadett and a viva) and all of these were down to the bracket being welded on in a diffrent place on the new exhausts.
Y'know, thats exactly how it sounds like metal on spinning metal and it is a tinny, hollow sound.

I'll have a good look around it tomorrow morning. I've checked all the mounts and tried to move the exhaust from the tailpipe. No sounds or abnormal movement;seems the rubbers are doing their job ok.

You mention metal on revolving metal ? While under the car check along prop shaft for brake pipes/fuel pipes coming adrift, also chock wheels and check handbrake cables arent flapping when handbrake is off. They are quite close to prop and just could be adrift and touching. I know its a long shot, but worth checking.
