Spin on Oil Filter Adapter - Leaking
Spin on Oil Filter Adapter - Leaking
I finally filled the engine with oil and fired it up this afternoon. As part of my recent work on the car, I fitted a Spin on Oil Filter adapter. I am having trouble getting the outer ring of the adapter to fully seal itself to the engine block. I even tried a new rubber gasket/seal thinking the one provided may have been nicked or cut. The filter is on tightly, but can't get the leak to stop.

Anyone got any ideas....I don't know what to do short of giving up and putting the old canister filter back on, which I really don't want to do.

Your ideas would be appreciated.
ps: I tried looking for a relavent thread using the search function, but didn't come up with anything.

Re: Spin on Oil Filter Adapter - Leaking
I had this when I put one on my TR6 Harry. Took it back and Moss told me they'd never encountered the problem before but they'd replace it anyway. New one was fine. When I relayed the tale to the TR specialist that did work on my car he said that was par for the course with one in three that he bought having to go back. He'd often order two or three at a time and take the duff ones back on the next visit to save time! The Dolomite one is a different shape; the TR one has an elbow to allow the filter to face down, but I'll bet they're made by the same people...

Re: Spin on Oil Filter Adapter - Leaking
Check that the Inner and outer parts of the conversion move freely(ish) if the inner section seizes against the outer you will either crush the O ring in the block or not tighten it fully.
The inner gets tightened by the thread adaptor, and the outer is held in place, and seats against the block O ring as the filter is fitted and turned to hand tight.

Take it off and check both parts move freely.
Re: Spin on Oil Filter Adapter - Leaking
Thanks, I'll take a look at it. I know that the inner and outer were rather stiff when put together, and they certainly didn't move much without using considerable effort.

I'll let you know.

Thanks Alun and Ben for the ideas. Hopefully I won't have to have another one sent "accross the pond".
Spin on adapters
Does anyone over there other than Ri**ers stock these?
Does anyone have a part number for the cartridge that comes with them - as i'm sure i can get a filter cheaper than the 7.5 squid quoted.

Cheers,
