sprint engine advice

#1 Post by andyh » Tue May 09, 2006 6:58 pm

hi all
I've fitted a sprint engine to my tr7 over the winter (had to try and get a bit of decent performance out of it) and have a few questions
whats the timing for setting with a strobe? my manual gives 10btc static and thats what I strobed it up to at 1000 revs

I,ve shimmed the tappets up to 15 thou when cold but it still sounds a bit tappety is this ok?

and finally anybody know the best needles to use in the carbs with k+n filters and a tubular manifold?
thanks in advance
tubular manifold...-sigh-

The standard sprint rich needle is the BBT, but I should think you would want richer in the higher stations thanks to your better breathing.

This is a very handy spreadsheet that should be able to sort you out.
when there are so many good 1300 dolomite shells around...
Anyway the static timing sounds about right and the valve clearances are of anything on the tight side unless you have a non standard cam, which tend to use clearances in the 8 thou inlet and 9 exhauts sort of range.
It shouldn't sound too tappety with those clearances.
Theres a bit more top end noise than an 8 valve cos theres a lot more going on. Can you be sure oil is getting through the cam followers okay?
I think ABT's may do but others have more idea of this.
Mine has a diffrent cam and I forget what we used its so long ago...
