Sprint nd 1850 Starters
After seeing a picture of an 1850 starter and talking to George it would appear the solenoid on my starter is at a different place to a normal 1850 starter and more like a Sprint starter.<br>

It has 2M100 written on it, is that sprint or 1850?

M100 is the generic for the starter type.<br>

All Sprint starters have the solenoid offset as do some 1850 ones. Some 1850 ones have the solenoid mounted perpendicularly to the line drawn between the two mount holes, though I have yet to work out why...<br>

25701A is the smaller number above the M100 number which ID's the 1850 application in conjunction with the '542' numbers on end casting and bendix

1850 are '2 hole' mounting and Sprint are '3 hole' mounting, the solenoid is the same on both. There are a coule of starters on the bay at the mo, the one up North dain't look Sprint or 1850 to me <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START ;) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

I took the solenoid off the starter and cleaned it up with WD40 and wet and dry, cleaned up all the conection and put it on the car. One working starter <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :D --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <br>

It was a real commotion to get my car started, it would start first turn of the key about 1 in 20 times! The majority of the time I would need to rock it in gear as few times to dislodge the pinion then try again, Several times!

Starter Bolts
Can any please tell me how to get that top bolt back onto my starter? I'm tempted to drive with just two!

Remove your spoiler and get a set of long (18", 21" and 24") 3/8" drive extensions.<br>

You don't need to remove your spoiler but you do need a 3/8" drive 9/16" socket to get the wall of the socket past the cylinder profiles on the outside of the block. I also use a long 'wobble bar' extension and use my ratchet between engine and radiator. Pack the socket with grease to hold the nut in the socket and you can just get your fingers onto the head of the bolt from above - its easier if the heater blower is removed.<br>
