How do I identify my engines?
Greetings from New Zealand!<br>
As a pom over here, I had to have a UK car and have bought a Dolomite. It is an 1850, but the engine is cooked.<br>

The 1850 engone is overhead cam with a chain drive, alloy head, cast iron block and canted over to the side. The 1300 and 1500 ohv are very similar to each other but totally different to the 1850, being enitirely cast iron and sit vertically.<br>

You should source another 1850 or TR7 engine for your car. Plenty here of course but not sure about over there...<br>
We do have other NZ correspondants so lets hope they can help you.<br>

1300 and 1500 are a lot smaller and sit upright, the numbers stamped in the head would identify which you have. <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/spitheads.htm" target="top">More info here</a><!--EZCODE LINK END-->.<br>
1850, TR7 and Sprint engines are all slant 4, i.e the head is well offset to the left side and the pistons travel at 45 degrees to the vertical. A Sprint has a broad rocker cover with Triumph cast into it and the plugs in tubes through the rocker cover. On 1850 and TR7 the plugs are over the exhaust manifold, 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 point at each other. These two can be hard to tell apart but a 7 lump should have a water outlet from the back of the head, the same spot on an 1850 is a blanking plate.<br>

Is this the light blue car that was on Trademe?
If it is, I know a bit of the history as I saw this in Rotorua about a year ago when it was previously sold. I'm in Auckland, have a few Dolomites and a TR7. Also know a few contacts locally who may know a bit about the 1500 motors. Give me a ring sometime at work 520 9502. Geoff<br>

PS There was a TR7 engine for sale on Trademe recently for $100 (in Hamilton I think). This would be ideal for the Dolomite and bolts straight in. Auction has finished and I don't know whether it sold so might be worth keeping an eye open. I have an old 1850 around in the shed but it was a bit rattly which is why we replaced it in my son's car.

Unfortunately the 1500 won't bolt in to your 1500. The subframe is different.

When I bought the car, it came with a hugh amount of spares, 4 1500 engines, overdrive gearbox, 1500 rear axle and complete 1500 front subframe and suspension, doors, screens, dashboard, seats, brakes and servo's and boxes of little bits I haven't made my way through yet!<br>
I have a choice therefore of finding an 1850 to replace and keeping the autobox (good for Auckland!) or stripping out and fitting a 1500 with manual box.<br>
So I have asked for opinions. Cheers, Ian.

Hi, yes they were, the previous owner of my Dolly, broke three 1500's, hence all the spares. Unfortunately, for all the boxes of spares, he didn't keep a clutch pedal and assembly! Cheers, Ian.
