All gone now.
All gone now.
Found this photo of the Canley site, dates from the late 70's -can you spot your car?

All gone now of course, but "mother" (the main assembly hall) where your car would of emerged is the darker long building which is set at an angle.

Ho hum
Re: All gone now.
i think about stuff like that from time to time actually, it really does make me feel quite sad, along with the rover thing too...

longbridge isnt far from the bodyshop where orange and white are hiding, drove by part of the rover works not long ago and unless im missing something the old site on one side of the road has been levelled ?!

I've stood in rimmers reading those write ups on webster and the other 'cheeses', and it really is quite gutting.

thats 'progress' for you, once the worlds biggest motor corporation... how crap is this country really?!

project orange - slow progress
project black - coming on, could be sold...
project white - pimp my tolly, next year!

I reckon CAB is the eighth on the left, second row, which acurately dates the picture to 1974 ...probably October

Re: All gone now.
Yes, it makes me sad too, if you either go into Google Earth or Google maps and enter the postcode CV4 9DB you can rotate the picture to get a direct comparison with the above. Unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be a way of saving that image in either program to show a side by side comparison.

The buliding you see to the right with the white roof is the area where transmissions were made and assembled. It was known as the "shadow factory" where during the last war not only components for the war effort were constructed but the Dehavilland Mosquito twin engined bomber/fighter was assembled.

The road now leading to where this site once stood is now called Toledo Close.

I understand that the most recent demolition at Longbridge is the onsite Barclays bank, here workers could cash their wages and carry out all other bank transactions without leaving the site.

Guess bank thought: no factory + no workers + bank = no need.

Re: All gone now.
How did you do that?

I been trying to do that for hours <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

Unfortunately that isn't the aera for the factory!!!

It is further up than that, try entering Herald Avenue that should bring it up, then you need to look for a large white building in the centre - Sainsburys, you can then use the junction of the roads and the railway line to lock in on the actual location of the original photo.

However, I'd be keen to know how you did obtain that Google Earth piccy.

Re: All gone now.
Yes only the part south.

There is of course a lot more of the site but only managed to find the original 70's photo showing this bit. I think it was orginally taken for the benefit of those living in the houses as I had to crop a lot of the top to show what there is of the factory at the bottom.
