Re: CHECKING THE AUTO TRANSMISSION FLUID….HELP!!!

So the level is always taken with the engine running (so the pump in the gearbox is working) and the box in P, having run through all the gears first then back to P. This makes sure the torque converter is full.
If you just pull the stick out without it being running - you will get a high reading as ...

Re: Ballasted or not ballasted coil?

Is it too late to suggest you get a real electronic ignition, and not one that has "spark" in it's name and comes from China for a few dollars?
The appalling reliability of these useless things is just about the most common cause of breakdowns I see on classic cars, so much so that i now carry a ...

Re: Mystery 1850 (?) part

No homework needed.
It is Piranha or Newtronic - Newtronic took over Piranha so the two are essentially the same.

Re: Sprint LSV

Next time someone is advised to remove the LSV on a Sprint axled Dolomite as "it's not needed and it'll pass the MoT without one anyway" they need to read this thread.
It's needed, it's dangerous without, and yes they can be repaired as suggested above.
Suggestions about it being caused by the ...

Re: Steering rack lubricant capacity ?

I didn't think Dolomite steering racks had lubricant in them, only grease there not power steering

Dave

I think they only intended them to be greased as standard - 5 strokes with the gun every year I think was the recommendation. The grease tends to not work it's way along to the end bush on ...

Re: Steering rack lubricant capacity ?

Never seen a capacity listed for the Dolomite, but on Chevettes, Escorts, Victors etc which all use very similar types of rack it was always 1/3 of a pint of EP90...

Re: Three for the 'anoraks'...

I don't know what they are - but definitely not Marina!
Marinas have normal bolted flanges like a Dolomite.
A Marina clutch slave is flangeless, this might be what you are thinking of? Incidentally if you have any Marina clutch slaves they are worth good money as they are very hard to get now.

Re: Anyone heard of solid subframe mounts?

So pretty much any Renault, Citroen Peugeot..
Nissan. Anything on the Mk4 Golf Platform.
Vauxhall Vectra Zafira Astra Corsa... All rubber mounted. It's pretty unusual not to have rubber mounts!
Later Minis do too ..

Re: Anyone heard of solid subframe mounts?

There's no really good reason why the front subframe is rubber insulated anyway. Sure it helps (a bit) with noise and vibration transmission, but most moderns have a similar subframe or reasonable facsimile that is just bolted solidly to the shell.

I could easily understand the compo dept wanting ...

Re: MOT

It depends on the biscuits you bring.
Digestives - fail.
Chocolate Digestives - pass and advise.
Chocolate Caramel Digestives - pass.
It's a tricky one.... It should fail, really. But can I definitively say THAT PARTICULAR CAR had an LSV from new? No.
If the modifications were done well, and there ...

Re: MOT

Absolutely no requirement to have them for an MOT, they are not mentioned in any way in the handbook as a testable item. A lot of modern cars are missing them - on VWs in particular they corroded away and fall off. About the only way they could fail is if they are insecure and likely to foul ...
