Does the pinion part no x ref with a herald one by any chance?

I have 5 recon racks here at the moment 4 ranging from 3.5 to 3.75 turns lock to lock, 1 at 2.75+. I have put a recon unit on Quicksprint ; the one taken off purported to be quicker ratioed than standard, it measures at 3.25.

If we can get a supply of the pinions, the recon folk I use would be able to incorporate them at a fraction of the £250 quoted...the part number might be enough...

Also... Can someone explain to me how the pinion with the extra tooth 'magically' meshes with the rack? I can't figure this one out...

I'd love to know the answer to this as well, after all, assuming that the pinion centre is the same distance from the rack, then the pitch cannot be a match, so the pinion would have to be a) mounted closer to the rack and smaller in diameter or b) the same diameter but used with a rack that matches it.

I just had a new one for the MOT last Month, it has exactly the same number of turns [as the original] between locks at 2¾, so this would tend to support the theory that early cars did indeed have a higher geared assembly.

If the pinion is a worm gear, then the angle of the cuts would compensate for number of teeth on a similar diameter shaft

Pinion part number is 307522 (RHS) or 307523(LHS).

Quite a number of years ago I removed a Dolomite for dumping from the village of Papigoe. The owner stressed that it had had a new rack fitted but this had proved troublesome because the track rods were to long. He removed these, cut them to length then cut new threads at the engineering workshop of his employer. This man was sure he had been sold a Herald rack.

Tonight, whilst waiting for the exhaust bracket I made for my next door neighbour to cool down, I checked the old rack from my car and it is 3.25 turns lock to lock . I am sure I also still have a rack for a 1500TC, so could that yield a second 7 tooth pinion?

Hello, Done this many times before.

A 1300FWD has a rack that is 3.25 turns. These racks are the same as dolomite, only the trackrods of the FWD are longer.
You can use a 1300FWD rack and swap the trackrods or swap the pinion into a dolomite rack. The only difference in all the racks are the teeth of the pinion. For the rest it is all the same and all parts do fit in all types, no matter howmany teeth there are. Just adjust the play by shimming. The 3.25 is very "quick"for a dolomite. 90 degrees corner is a 1/4 turn and your wife is still able to park the car. So i would say happy swapping.
