I will detail the rebuild on this thread.
I've never liked travelling through London & it sure was hot today. No air-con in my truck.

Roy's a top bloke. When I did the TC conversion on Snowdrop I needed a throttle cable so he sent me one through the post at no extra cost.
I hope there's no damage to the pistons when the head comes off.

Come on Roy, air conditioning?!? I thought you were a hardened Sprint driver
Seriously though, last summer I had one of those powered hand fans in the glovebox! But KSF has always coped with the London traffic very well, and never really got too hot.
Looking forward to the updates

UPDATE
All stripped. The 2 little cam sprocket bolts had sheared, no obvious piston/valve contact. Very lucky !

Head gasket was just starting to blow.

Home made water pump slide hammer.

Cor, that is lucky!
What with the worn water pump and head gasket, it would probably have needed work done on it anyway.
I will await the shopping list
Roy, can you see any engine number on the block? The V5 still has the original one on it. I've never been able to find one on the current engine, but I've heard some replacement blocks didn't have any.

all cleaned up ok, no damage

another home made tool for brass cage removal

found half a bolt head in the sump while fishing with a magnet, I'd really recomend pulling engine out, removing sump & having a good clean inside.

How on earth did that get in there, and more importantly, where is the other half?

Engine out? If you say it needs it, go for it, better safe than sorry

Re: The resurrection of KSF404T - 1978 Sprint
bits of bolts & swarf from chewed up cam sprocket bolts - I couldn't find the tab washer!
Everything checks out fine;
I've removed & checked all 16 valves, non bent just carboned up & needing reseating.
Pistons & bores all fine.
Jackshaft bearing fine.
Cam bearings fine.
Shopping list;
water pump & L/H thread bolt
full gasket set inc seals plus extra cam cover gaskets for future re-torqueing
exhaust downpipe gasket
timing chain, tensioner,
cam sprocket (holes chewed up) bolts & tab washer
club plug tubes
plug leads
oil & filter (screw on type)
engine rubber mounts need replaceing too

Glad to hear there's no valve or piston damage. KSF is in good hands. Keep us posted Roy.

Re: The resurrection of KSF404T - 1978 Sprint
Good news on a sprint engine strip down makes a pleasant change.
New pump
what was the problem with the old one? Don't forget the pump block bush.
How did you clean the pistons so completely and quickly Roy? For the valves I read somewhere oven cleaner saves using mechanical methods, anyone ever tried it?
