Waxstat conversion

#1 Post by DavePoth »

I'm looking to get my 1850 running right, so after replacing the ignition bits I guess I'll have to start looking at the carbs. They're waxstats, so I guess the 2p mod will be in order, but if the jets themselves are worn, can they be replaced with the normal ones?

I had a feeling it was possible. Good news then. I may even have figured out a sneaky way to fix the carb mounts. More on that soon though.

4 x 1p pieces. :D

That'll remove the waxy bit. But I think the jets will probably be knackered as well once I've sorted the ignition, so I don't want to pay extra for waxstat bits I'll just be binning. the HS6 should be more or less identical in construction to the HS4; the swap should be very similar.

That's right. Pop off the waxstat covers and remove the waxstat elements. A 1p coin fits into the recess nicely so save the hassle of buying new jets etc!

one other thing you should do is either solder up the poppet valve or replace it with a solid butterfly disc.

I'm not too worried about that one - it's a bit down the list just because it'll do what it does consistently, unlike the waxstat.

I did an article in DM a while back about the mod, I probably still have it archived somewhere. Drop me a PM with your email adddress and I'll see if I can did it out. It's really easy and makes such a difference. I could do with converting my 1500 really as well!

I no longer share this antipathy to waxstats...
My 2 best runing cars have them...they work properly in that I use the choke far less in the warm up phase and they idle smoothly the rest of the time and give good mpg...

The trick is to get ones that work properly in the first place and keep them clean....so they dont get over hot with a layer of insulating crud over them.

What they cant cope with is a long traffic jams on very hot days, then they tend to get over hot and lean the mixture off too much, giving idling problems. But an electric fan helps here.

I would just try and get new proper OEM jets with waxtstats and then it will all work as it was meant to.

After all BL did used to have a test dept and this mod was range wide...why do we think we all know better with a few spanners and our crap old garages...Most of us dont even have exhaust gas analysers...

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.

They were only fitted for emissions reasons, and I imagine the effect on hot running was well known even then. Also with the exhaust leak (which I suspect is due to a stripped thread in the head) I have little chance of keeping the underbonnet temp low enough to make them work properly.

Hello all,
just wondered if anyone has any decent snaps of the subject matter. My sprint is currently getting on my t**s with its poor idling performance. The major fix for me at the moment is the conversion to alloy carb mounts but if waxstats or penny coins can make a difference then I'll do it all at once.
Regards
Jason.

Just type waxstat conversion into google. Since the waxstat was applied across the range, there are how-to articles for everything from Minis to rovers, some of which have got great pictures.

I'm having huge idling problems with my 1850, thought I'd cured it by removing crud from the fuel pump but no - unless of course there is now more crud in the fuel pump.
On hot days after a 30 minute run the car idles fast. On cold days the car won't idle.
When were waxstats fitted and what's the giveaway to tell if they are waxstats or not?
