Sprint Camshaft - Fast Road

Hi all, one of the engine modifications I'm planning for my sprint is a new fast road camshaft. Iv been looking through piper and Newman cams and I think the Newman road cam is to tame and there "tarmac rally sprint" cam to hot. The piper cams are so expensive, £500 compared £215 for Newman, but there Fast Road cam seems about right. Its got a 280 degree duration compared to 260 or 290 by newman. A power band of 2500 - 6500 would be ideal.

Just wanted to know what cams you guys are running for fast road and occasional trackday use?
Also does anyone know what the Duration is for the standard sprint cam?

Hi Dale, some time ago I made this list with some basic technical specifications of Sprint cams from different manufacturers compared to the BL and ST cams.




Most track day Sprints use the STR0091 or TT10106 equivalent cam, which with a set of Webers, free-flowing exhaust and some modest porting sees around 175 - 185 bhp.

Newman cams do the STR profiles as well.

I got an STR91 from Moss, similar price to Newmans as I recall. Box says "Kent cams".

Newman Cams are (very) local to me. They are a helpful bunch and will do one-offs for people. If anyone wishes me to take up queries with them face to face so as to speak; or to collect and/or deliver (within reason); I would be happy to do so.

but why do so many people want a fast road camshaft on road cars?

Power gained at the top end of the rev range is usually at the expense of the low & medium speed power.
On the road low speed torque & a good mid range are far more important than top end.
BHP figures are just to impress in the pub while torque wins races.

My Sprint is fitted with twin Dellorto 45's, has a ported head, sports exhaust, a standard cam, lightened & balanced bottom end, electronic ignition. It starts & idles well, is docile in traffic, quick spirited cross country driving rarely sees me rev it over 4000 rpm, but when I do rev it hard the character changes & it charges off. Plus I still average around 35mpg!

A few years ago one of the bike magazines played with the then new model 600 Fazer, a bike renowned for being peaky & revvy. A local tuning firm (BSB) reground the cams to a softer profile. On their dyno it made a lot less peak power, but on the road while ridden back to back with a standard bike it was a lot quicker in every situation & would actually stomp away while the standard bike was waiting to "come on cam".

Very true Roy but I changed cam when my old one had a badly worn lobe and finger.

I can say the new cam once timed up and rejetted does make the car a LOT livelier. I also have the advantage at the mo of driving it back to back with a standard Sprint. I'll take the 91....while it may not walk away from 10 mph in third like the std cam will, its on song by 20 and then its bye bye GTi time...

But it is about 10% less economical, but its hard to drive it the same...

As Roy says, there are compromises with 'performance' cams. The standard Sprint cam is actually quite good, nice smooth spread of power. Swapping cams is about gaining useful power but what may be useful on the track is no good on the road. I have a Kent DMS1 and the engine idles smoothly at 800rpm and pulls strongly from about 2000rpm all the the way to the red. Fuel consumption is excellent too. You pays yer money ...

I have a DMS1 to fit to my engine at some point. It looks quite mild compared to some others, should be good for the road. Just not sure whether to put it in the Sprint or the spare Sprint engine I got for my TR7

Yep I have to agree that the standard cam does a good job.
I fitted my Piper one because I used to come home from the track dissapointed with my car, as too many cars past me!
I reckon it was worth a couple of seconds a lap at Castle Combe.

Thanks for all the info guys, I think I will get a Piper 270 as I have found one at a reasonable price... although I'm sure ill change my mind again by tomorrow!!!
