Also I've sorted the sills to meet the doors, i finished welding up the doors where they were rusted through etc, and i gave the bottom of doors and sill a final light skim of filler to smooth and flush the lot.

See pic for example of exhaust. :)

Well it's your car but that beemer looks a bit, sad? Bloke with £30 quid of Halfords rattle can sad? I guess I just don't get that look so it's probably me.

I know it's none of by beeswax but why not use the time you have the shell in a fully equipped body shop to do the best you can on the bodywork? Nuts to side exit zorst etc for the moment*. Hire a transit and trailer on March 30 and take a pile of oily bits and the most gorgeous bodyshell possible down to Jons place for reassembly. Your work on the metal so far is top notch so, imo, it deserves top notch paint. Whose ever seen a black metalflake car? I havn't. I see 'rat look' cars most weeks and generally I wish I had a camera handy so I could post 'em on barryboys.

*unless there's body mods involved I guess?

Sorry, I just don't get the Mel Gibson worship look

Well I like really like matt and satin paint (hence why I bought the car in the first place prior to you!) and think it would look excellent in matt black.

Here's my other matt black and as you said the chrome is really good on matt black. (I won't show you the rollered Porsche 924 I did for a charity run as you may cry!)

BUT - by the look of the bodywork now sorted would be a shame not to have a shine to show off the quality of the work. I'm presuming a non metallic, non pearl type solid colour would be doable? Probably more popular when you sell on as well if that matters? Black would be good choice. Would also be nice to see an unusual colour, maybe white, beige, a dark orange?

That Beemer looks like a vinyl wrap as well?

I am of the opinion that matt black works on some cars, not on others.
That Golf, IMHO, is one of those that works. Maybe it's the shape of the car, maybe how well it's been applied? It simply works to my eyes. The BMW in the earlier post? That looks plain wrong to me, whether it's vinyl or paint, I don't rate it at all.

The Dolomite? I agree that it deserves a nice shiny coat, but the fact that its prep work is so comprehensive would benefit whatever top coat you chose to lay on it, so it all comes down to the fence sitter's favourite phrase: "Your ride, your way!"

Orange would be good though. The louder, the better.

Its like Marmite i'd say people clearly love it or hate it.
As for the beemer i put up the pic only as an example of the tone of paint, as compared to an aerosol which is can look diy, i didnt intend it as an example of make and model paint style.

I agree that on some cars it looks plain silly, but then what i think looks silly many others think is the best thing ever. That being said, in my opinion matt looked well on the dolomite as it gave it a bit of a meaner look. As for the bodywork, its the best i could do with the time and i'm sure someone will have something to point out on it in time, and in my experience gloss black is very good/bad at showing up every wave or ripple on the body which i'm sure there will be something-my time is running out in the garage.

I did intend to add some pearl to the matt black to give it an edge compared to most matt black cars. I sprayed a lambo before in pearl orange which was v nice and would look pretty good on the dolomite, but again its all about time and convenience now so i will prob go with standard gloss black as it will be the easiest to touch up or rectify in future. I have been looking at many classics over the past few days and i like the straight gloss black with all the polished chrome. I think it would look good in time if i also decide to vinyl/do something different with the roof.

I certainly do like the golf mk1 gti's monty. :)

At the moment she's nearly ready for primer, il put up a pic or two sunday hopefully. :)

I saw a fairly new Jaguar convertible today, not certain of the model as it's not something I know anything about, some kind of 2-seater, the one that came along after the demise of the XJS, but the thing is, it was on a recent plate, maybe a less than 12 year old car....

Matt black, with an iron cross on the bonnet! The guy was driving in an area where there's no shortage of factory-spec ones, and playing Rammstein or similar from his car Hi-Fi.
For this character, I felt a great deal of respect.

Primed!!!!!!

Its amazing what a bit of primer can do to a man's heart. Its now all primed, done a bit of flatting, still need to do more before paint, haven't flatted the bonnet or boot yet either. Still, as soon as i got it all primed it made me feel better to see her relatively one colour. I removed/treated all the rust inside doors and primed them also with the rest, it had a yellow door,a red one,a green one,a red/green one,so now they're also all one colour now which pleases me. :)

Still have a bit to do before final paint, going to try and put it on as nice as possible because i wont be flatting back and polishing it up until awhile, as i want to try and do as much mechanics as i can before the 31st. So i will polish the paint after a few weeks when i have sorted all the more needed stuff.

So, what would everyone say was the best engine oil for the standard sprint engine, and clutch/brake fluid? I have a haynes book for it but i guess alot has changed in tech since then so i thought it best to ask on here.

Also i read somewhere that having twin brake calipers on the front does no good unless the servo is changed to a bigger one to cope with the extra amount of brake pistons.?

Things seem to be getting there but times running out..... :(

I would love one of the vehicles from Beyond Thunderdome or perhaps the Interceptor. Way cool!

I like the matt black look, that Golf is very well done. However, the rattle can school of doing it is not great.

If I had the nuts I would redo the fwd properly in satin black, with proper stripes and alloys. I don't, so it'll be Pearl White then

I do think the black, be it matt, satin or gloss suits the style of our cars. Whatever the colour, it's your car mate. Paint it and enjoy!

Great progress and shame about the deadline :(

Although i'm not going to do it now, Maybe some other time, maybe, I do think a side stripe would look cool. I thought i'd sand it first when levelling just out of interest. :)
