'Tina' 1971 Toledo Restoration

Here's my Sapphire blue Toledo and a few shots of what iv done since i bought her..




All of the road wheels have been stripped and repainted (as the car isnt kept at my home i took one home each night to work on)




Front suspension top and bottom ball joints (some of which were looking just slightly tired!) were replaced with brand new ones.
here are the old ones once off the car..


and the new ones fitted..



I was also lucky enough to get hold of some brand new old stock brake drums for the front as the old ones were very pitted.. still in their original boxes and grease coating!


Under the bonnet, heres a little list:

Oil and filter renewed
air filter renewed
valve clearances adjusted
plug gaps adjusted
fuel filter cleaned out
rocker arm and valve springs cleaned up
carb float chamber cleaned out
fuse box connections and earths all cleaned up
rocker cover removed, stripped and resprayed plus new rocker gasket.





Iv taken a week off work to give the bodywork some attention, so far i haven got past the drivers sill!
all the rotten metal cut out... (new sill above it)


all the good metal thats left, ready to be cleaned up and reconstructed..

Good work Andrew. I need to do something similar to the wheels on my Tolly, but they are pretty rusty. I was hoping to have them professionally sand blasted and painted, but now I think I will be trying to do it myself to save on costs.

i would like to have had that done but im on a bit of a tight budget, it just took some hard work with paint stripper and a wire brush and im pleased with the results.
Halfords do a specific wheel silver spray paint which looks to be pretty similar to the factory paint.

It is good to see one of the so called "lesser" models receiving the restoration treatment.
Sapphire is such a smart colour !

I'm surprised that it had that much rust. It all seemed very solid when I last saw it and that wasn't long since. Not to worry though; main thing is that you're putting it right now.

There's another pair of front drums on eBay just now and I've a set in my loft as they're Rebel ones too, but always wise to buy such things when you can.

didnt realise that 'Tina' had that much rust, i thought she more solid than that. The mot tester never said anything about rust, and he is a VERY thorough tester

i really dont know if sapphire was a late or early colour, but the plate under the bonnet says paint code 96.

i really wasnt expecting any more than one or two little patches but after prodding with a screw driver i decided it was best to renew the whole thing. It looks like when the sills were renewed in the past that they left a lot of the rotten original sill inside and welded a new one on top

Sapphire, paint code 96, is indeed an early colour, used up until c.1974.

I am impressed by the thoroughness of your approach to bodywork repairs.

What you need is some discs and callipers from my dolly 1300 sub frame...
Don't bother with drums...they are for Marinas...
