bl***y hell Tinweevil that realy is useful information - I suspected that there were drain holes in the scuttle but having cleared all the debris with a vacuum in BRJ, 'cause water was ponding in the scuttle, could not see much evidence of "drain holes" but now I know where to look, and armed with cable ties and your idiots guide, will put cleaning them on the "must do" list this weekend.

That's absolutely amazing, how on earth did you discover all that?
Maybe my water in the passenger well isn't from the A-post after all and I can take my car out in the rain. :D

That is really awesome work Tinweevil and appreciated. I am glad that other members will benefit from this information.
Important to know that the drain holes are not round as could be expected. Also appreciate the cable tie the best tool for this. So impressed with this forum (like a good book you can't put down) that I have sent away for membership even though a long way away. Will get into the job once out of my pajamas (9.27am). Another thing you have to explain to me is your photo. What is the green?

Thanks again Tinweevil for your most comprehensive report into this problem. I found the tywrap/cable tie quite useless being too soft and resorted to a bit of no.8 fencing wire. You are probably thinking horrors & horrors of the scratches but this is Australia where everything can be fixed with fencing wire. Poking around with it generated a fair bit of debris and regular vaccuuming was done. It took no time at all to find the drain slot on the extreme left and I poked the wire right through the foam into the engine compartment and loosened the foam stuck to the firewall there as you suggested. Now knowing what to look for, I did the next one. These two would have been the problem causing the water level to rise above the level of the air intake to the "eye" on the passenger side. I don't think there is a problem further along and as it wasn't the best conditions with a light globe in a fairly dark garage so will explore the rest one day the car is outside in the sun and where I can test drain it.
I can now look to taking the car through an automatic car wash with confidence.

I cleared 3 of the holes today, hole #4 was very badly blocked and needed forceful clearing with....a hair grip! There's quite a bit of rust down the bottom of the scuttles, should I pour some 3-1 oil down there?

I'm no expert on bodywork but i would think kurust followed by waxoyl would be better than 3 in1 oil? Maybe push a drinking straw through before doing the waxoyl bit so you preserve the drainage hole and the waxoyl doesn't cause a blockage?

Hope this is some use, even if only to spawn another better idea!!

Cheers,
Dave

I wonder.....
rear axle tie bar bushes are suspect if the car also judders when moving off..
Could this be the judder problem I get when pulling away re: LD......., hmm, maybe, just maybe.

Hi tinweevil,

Thanks for your BRILLIANT post (description and pictures) which has just saved me many £££s. Last week I ended up with a paddling pool in the driver's side footwell of my Sprint when the car was left outside during a torrential downpour. Although the windscreen looked OK, I was on the point of taking the car to Autoglass to have the windscreen pulled off and re-sealed. I then read your post, discovered that the scuttle was not draining, and have just spent a couple of hours diligently following your instructions on how to clear the drain points. I guess it was number 6 that caused my problem? Anyway, I now have 5 clear drains (checked by pouring water in the scuttle) and tomorrow should find either the right stiff tiewrap or thin metal strip to clear drain number 5 under the servo. (You are right - this one it VERY tricky!). Thanks again. Robert

Hello again tinweevil,

I wonder if you could provide more information on drain hole 5 in the scuttle? Despite my best efforts I have not managed to successfully open up this one. (I washed the Sprint yesterday and the scuttle was bone dry apart from the "bowl" under the brake servo tube.) I presume that the drain is in the centre (lowest point) under the servo tube, but what's the best way to attack it (top left, top right, from underneath...)? Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,

I honestly don't know exactly where it is, I've never managed to see the hole. I would expect it to be a pressing similar to number 2 and dead in the middle of the bowl so that it is at the lowest point.

Anyone got an endoscope?

Yes, though its lens is a bit sort of covered in Shell Ensis 5 after the last time I shoved it inside the sills and chassis legs......

I'll find out whether it'll flex sufficiently to see under the servo. :)
