Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
A little while since i updated as iv been on holiday.
Not great news so far though. Got the car out on the road just for a little test and it seems the 2nd gear problem is still there so im going to swap the box thats on the car for my spare one. The new sill doesnt really sit flush with the doors as well as it should so some adjustments are going to have to be made to it. Finally to top it off i notices a little moistness under the petrol tank, i removed it to find years of tin foil, masking tape, resin, glued on bits of metal and (believe it or not) pieces of pie tins! the actual holes in the tank are minimal so at least there is some good news!

Wow, you are not having much luck with what was thought of by many on here as a car in great condition. I hope you manage to get over these problems and soon have it back on the road.

Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
thank you!
haha no, not much luck at the minute but at least they are all problems that are fairly straightforward to solve and im quite happy to put the work in
Still, on a more positive note im getting on well with tidying the floorpan which doesnt need much attention, just a wire brush and some jenolite here and there. Pictures to follow!

Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
Most of the floor is problem free apart from the front footwells which collected a little bit of water over the years but luckily there was only a hole about the size of a 1p which was welded up. All bare metal or flaking areas have been cleaned and bushed with an "anti rust" primer an im going to hammerite over these areas.

As mentioned before the petrol tank wasnt too healthy. You can see the various repaired areas here..

The doors were put back on so i could take the car back to my house as its been in another garage up until now until i could free up some space

and here she is all safe and sound
ready to start solving the gearbox, sill and tank before i get on with anything else

Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
I thought since i had the tank out id see what the boot floor was like, turns out it was a bit rough with 30 odd years of welded patches and pitted rust. All the bad metal was cut out and replaced..

the worst part was where the base of the tank sits..

Now, i probably just got carried away but since it was going to have to get done at some point anyway, i stripped the rear valance. I found out that once it was all back to bare metal you could see it had been shunted at some point in its life and repaired. Aside from that the bumper mounts were a bit iffy and pitted so more cutting was required.

Im also just learning how to MIG weld, so im quite pleased with the repairs on the valance iv done. heres a close of the patched up area on the top corner

Iv also been spending pennies elsewhere and got myself this decent set of sprint alloys which il probably just keep for 'special occasions' as i want the car to be as standard as possible

Great work, but please don't put those Sprint alloys on.
Sell them instead and invest the money back into the car.

Or release them into the wild. Well they must breed somewhere as there are far more sets of those than there ever were Sprints!Stan Part wrote:Great work, but please don't put those Sprint alloys on.

Stick some Wolfrace slots on it; pukka '70s man, innit.

Looking great Andrew. Any chance of a write-up for Toledo 2-4?
Also, it might be worth you replaceing the rear panel completely, they are cheap enough; £30.00 from Mick Dolphin from what I can remember. I have a spare in the "Toledo stock" but it is bagged for my car!

Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
Probably would have been easier to just put in a new panel looking back at it, i just got the last of the welding done last night and if nothing else it was good practice!
Iv been meaning to get something written up for the magazine, Im off work this week so ill have some time to get something sorted for you!
Cheers

Lovely Andrew; looking forward to it. Send me the text in a word document and the images in separate files (over 500kb in size is needed though)

Re: 'Tina' 1971 Toledo project
All the welding on the boot finished now and the valance is in zinc primer for the time being

inside i cleaned up all the welds, brushed primed and seam sealed around all the new parches and also around the outer edges of the boot floor to replicate the factory finish

iv painted it with navy blue hammerite (spray) now which il get a photo of soon. I dont mind this not being the correct paint colour as its a totally unseen area and the priority is mainly protecting it from the elements etc.
Youll remember from earlier on in the thread that the tank was peppered with holes and old repairs. after airing the tank out for a few weeks i chiselled and used tin snips to cut out the rotten sections, i cut one hole so that i could get 1 arm inside the tank and wire brush by hand and jenolite the inside.
I got my brother to do the welding on the tank seeing as it was crucual that the welds were good and im still half learning to weld

... and here we are, good-ish as new-ish! next job will be to make sure there are no pinholes in the welds and all being well, get the inside of the tank sealed with tank seal
