'Tina' 1971 Toledo Restoration

This is the boot floor in blue..


I decided to spray the visible parts of the boot in the cars colour of sapphire blue. I bought 2 cas from halfords who mixed it up for me, i was surprised they had it on their system, so far though iv only got as far as getting it into grey primer


IV also made decent progress in the gearbox dept.. the old box has been removed, so im planning to put a new clutch and release bearing in it whilst everythings accessible.





Heres the old one (the filthy one) and its replacement next to it. Also here is the petrol tank just after having the tank seal drained out of it, i bought it from rustbusters and its been easy enough to use, i just hope its done a decent job inside the tank!

Theres been limited but good progress since i last posted. Had to spend last weekend fitting a new water pump and timing belt to my Escort. It really puts into comparison how awkward working on modern cars is with regards to access of components you just cant get in to do anything on the Escort.

But as i mentioned before, at least some things have been happening with Tina. Finally the new clutch has been fitted..



And following much bother and swearing.. the Gearbox!



Turns out the Synchro ring on 2nd was knackered causing the gear to slip out from time to time. (i think there are 3 spring loaded ball bearings inside, which may possibly have failed causing the slackness). Next i need to bleed the slave cylinder, fit the starter and re connect the propshaft.

Progress on painting the boot was halted by a reaction in the paint so im going to attempt to get that rubbed down and resprayed in the following week so i can get the tank back in and give Tina a little road test to see if all is well with the gearbox under load.

I managed to spray inside the boot which turned out well and i was hoping to have the tank back in but I managed to break my leg falling over in the snow and looks like i wont be walking for about 8 weeks or so which puts a bit of a damper on things for the moment

Ouch! I'm also sorry to hear that. after all, the car isn't going to finish itself, is it?

If there's any help needed with it while your snow damage repairs itself (if only cars could do that eh?), give me a shout by PM, I'm not exactly far away and do have some uses.

Is that an alloy bell housing on your new box or just a painted one. A useful weight saving and highly sought after if so...

Its just silver paint on a normal bell housing, i thought id smarten it up as it had been stored somewhere that was damp i think and had lichen growing on it!

I had no idea there was an alloy version though, it would have made fitting it back on the car a hell of a lot easier. Were they an after market product?

Bags I refit the trim and make the booking at Christer's for the test, that's as much as I'd be doing in one day.

sounds more than feasable to me,,,although just for note i'm employed at U.P. none contractually so i only have notice of when i'm working up to 5 days ,,but certainly would pop over if where and when is worked out between the three of you

Andrew, how do you feel about the idea of an invasion by fellow enthusiasts?
If there were four of us there, then we'd have five fully-functioning legs between us. Should be enough as it's more usual to hold tools with the hands than with the feet.
