my track sprint project
Re: my track sprint project
It wasn't to bad actually, the front and rear lips are about 10 - 15 spot welds each to drill out and the grind off the lip on the sides. Mine was made easier because I am de guttering it so I gut off the vertical lip of the gutter for better access.
I shall look forward to laughing at the prices.

Re: my track sprint project
Oooh, I'll look forward to seeing it de-guttered. I keep looking at mine, grinder in hand... Haven't yet mind.
Re: my track sprint project
that looks great Neil, some fantastic work going on here. it reveals my own lack of knowledge about all the stuff required to get a car onto the track
are you going to scallop out the left turret to allow more room for exhaust manifold removal ? (or a set of custom extractors ?)
some great mods shown and pictured, many thanks

Re: my track sprint project
Thanks for all the good comments, it helps keep me motivated.
All ready done stu, there are probably some pics of it nearer the beginningstraylight wrote: are you going to scallop out the left turret to allow more room for exhaust manifold removal ? (or a set of custom extractors ?)
I don't intend to but who knows what the future brings.DF wrote:Neil will you consider selling it when its done ??????
Re: my track sprint project
Hi Neil Ive been looking at your build, and Im starting to build a racer myself as Ive collected the bits for the last 15 or so years, saying that makes me feel really old, and Ive got an extractor manifold to go on my car,and was curious to know if there is anything I need to calculate for when scalloping out the turret, Im getting some pictures from the car it was copied from but any input is good input. Was also very impressed by the way the rear panels were made lighter with the holes in them, and wondered how you done it or what tool you used and if you could let me know who supplied it, Well Done on your build and it will be great to see it finished as you have put so much hard work into it. many thanks. Matt
Re: my track sprint project
Neil was really impressed with all his holes until I took one of the bits he'd punched out and weighed it. Still, every bit helps.dolomatt wrote:Was also very impressed by the way the rear panels were made lighter with the holes in them, and wondered how you done it or what tool you used and if you could let me know who supplied it
punches
flare tool
I know some of them came from frost, I think some came from ebay. I can't remember what sizes the holes are either, I will have a look in the garage if Neil doesn't know.

As Steve said Frost or Motosport tools http://www.motorsport-tools.com/index.p ... 8059_18071
and you can pick the punches up quite cheap on ebay. Unfortunately removing weight is much harder than putting it in but every little helps.
As for the turret modding I just looked and what others had done and just did something similar that I thought looked about right. I am intending to make my own manifold so will just make it fit the gap I have. If I was you I would cut the Turret out with the engine in place or even better a dummy block & head so you can keep trying the manifold on until you have cut enough out.
Good luck with the build and it would be nice thread documenting your build as you go.
Re: my track sprint project
Time for another update
I have worked out the positioning for the steering and pedals and knocked up a prototype pedal box. I will be using modified versions of the original clutch and throttle with a homemade brake pedal.

The position of the vauxall column fits well with Triuph rack and gives less angle for the UJ's

Once these positions were set work on the roll cage could continue. was a bit of fun and games to get all the tubes to fit well.
The bulk of the cage is now done with just the front tubes needing to be welded to the bulkhead once I have fabricated some new plates, a diagonal tube needs welding in over the top of the main cage. I need to order some tube for this and get it bent to fit as the one provided was bent to the wrong angle and we were unable to undo the bend enough without weakening the tube.

I have now started cleaning up the cage and putting some paint on the tubes to give it some protection as it not likely to get much attention for a while as I will be moving house next week.

Re: my track sprint project
Thats a work of art neil, i get excited every time i see youve updated this thread

Re: my track sprint project
It looks weird without the bicycle frame in there :p
Re: my track sprint project
I never cease to be amazed at this car! So impressive that you're able to tackle this kind of work yourself. I'm especially impressed by the PAS installation, very neat.

Yes, this is one very interesting thread, I love seeing this sort of engineering happening.
