The Ho

#1 Post by Jasonthemove »

Hi after a break of 24 years , since owning a 1974 1300 , I am the proud owner of the Ho .... yho23v

1998cc dolly sprint , I am currently a banned driver , had 9 points for speeding from 09 , then got caught reading a text on the M27 last sept so I got a 6 month ban which is up in 9 weeks time . Hopefully in this time I will have the HO back on the road , maybe even repainted.

I looked into insurance on modern cars and it is horrific for an ex banned driver! My transit I use for work is going to be 1200!

I just have the ebay listing up to now , but will put up more pics asap, I think I got her for the right money , and have a budget of up to 2 grand to get her finished off , my initial list is ,, get through MOT , new interior, some original wheels , sort body/respray, upgrade suspension , full service , put proper sound system in.

I was thinking brooklands/brg for the paint?

That looks cheap enough and is a very rare auto too, bizarrely, according to period test figures, quicker through the 50-70 than the manual, so ffs watch that licence!

Welcome to the forum. :)

A 1974 1300, thats a really rare car as triumph stopped making them in 1971.

Good luck with the car and insurance you will find it difficult to find a insurance company that will cover you on a classic policy with that history.

As gardening equipment goes, a Dolly Sprint is an interesting idea.

sorry Jason, just a little joke. Adam was a cool guy who took it upon himself to test the boundaries sometimes. He was probably texting on his hot lap of the 'Ring :) Some of his exploits are on youtube, under "sindrey"

welcome again.

In an auto, you'll be half way there while the guy in the other lane, driving the manual car, is still looking for the clutch pedal. Then there's torque converter advantage - (GIYF here, I would but this post's probably going to be too long already  ).

The automatic Sprint has the same final drive gearing as the manual cars, which ought to make it a fair bit quicker in acceleration terms than a manual. The "official" (brochure) performance figures suggest a good 0.8 seconds shorter to 60 and a whole second quicker 50-70 which is where it's most useful.

MPG, according to that brochure again, should be around the same, only being better in the urban cycle.

OK, I know that some folk aren't happy unless they have an extra pedal to play with, but in many cases, the critics are those who never tried an automatic and besides, think of the kudos attached to being the bloke who saves a rare car from being butchered.
Then there's that insurance; autos that have been converted to manual count as modified cars and we all know what that'll do to your insurance costs......

The DVLA figures from 2009 only showed 17 Sprint Automatics on the road, so certainly worth saving! Granted, there's probably a few more hidden about off the road, but it's certainly worth keeping an Auto!

The same list showed 189 manual Sprints.
1978 Triumph Dolomite Sprint (project thread)
1966 Volkswagen 1300 (project thread)
1962 Austin Mini (project)
1962 MGA 1600 Mark II
1965 Mobylette SP50 (project)
2001 Rover 75 2.5-litre V6
