There's a couple of pics of the valance on page 9. All Phil's work was cut out & new metal let in. The doors haven't been done yet afaik.David6214 wrote:Got any pics of the front valance? Or that door?

You seem to be accelerating the rate of your restos, Mart!
(never thought that would be possible) Have you made a conscious decision to take on cars that need less welding/bodywork doing and do more of them?
BTW that blue looks absolutely stunning!

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
Yes, definiteley. After PFJ I decided I would leave the welding to the professionals, although I am an apprentice served fabricator/welder, welding car panels is a different kettle of fish. So I now look for the best bodywork I can find.swifty wrote:Have you made a conscious decision to take on cars that need less welding/bodywork doing and do more of them?

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
I cleaned the gearbox up today & noticed the date cast into the gearbox housing. I've not seen that before.

When I went to put the new clutch release bearing on. the old one I took off was different (left). Can someone measure the length of a bearing carrier please, as the extra flange on the old bearing is about 8mm. deep, so I was wondering if the carrier was shorter.

I started stripping the paint off the servo then noticed a chunk of rust on the back of the unit. So I hacked it off with a screwdriver (as you do) to reveal a gert hole. Not sure if I have a spare servo but will look tomorrow.

Here's a shot of all the bits waiting to go back on the car.

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
bearing carrier, from top to bottom was 97.5mm
with the bearing on the carrier: 108.6mm from the front of the carrier to the face of the bearing (probably a better measurement for you)
my gearbox(es) have the date thing too
stu

Martin...........
Please be aware that only the (genuine Unipart GRB209) RHP release bearings are the correct dimensions.Mad Mart wrote:When I went to put the new clutch release bearing on. the old one I took off was different.
Many kits supply (cheaper) alternatives but these have a shorter life span.

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
Thanks Stu. My measurements were the same with and without the new bearing in place. Which means that the carrier with the old bearing on was about 8mm. longer!
Thanks Ian, I only use nos B&B parts for the clutch.

Quite often on the timing cover, the bottom two sump bolt threads have been stripped. This is usually due to the fact that there is only one torque setting for the sump bolts and it seems a tad much for the ones going into ali, especially since the threads are UNF and not UNC. This is the case on PUS's cover, but luckily there is plenty of room to fit a bolt down from the top.

Started stripping, cleaning & rebuilding the carbs yesterday. Strangely one of the butterflies had a poppet valve fitted. That was soon swapped out.

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
Got on with cleaning & painting lots of bits this afternoon (after a 20 mile dash to Bristol with some flowers & a card for my Mum as it was her Birthday yesterday & I completely forgot, I've never forgotten before) but forgot to take pics (except these two)...

Re: Project PUS (Sapphire Sprint)
What do you use to clean up the alloy bits, Mart? (I'm guessing an angle grinder with knotted wire brush would just leave a small pile of ally dust...
)
