Hi, I am new to the club so I thought I would introduce myself. I have recently acquired a three door Toledo, it still has the 1300 engine but the previous owner said it has a Dolomite 1850 axel and wheels. I did the 10countries run in a five door Toledo in 2007 with club Triumph and since then I have always wanted another. I previously built a Tr7 V8 group 4 rally car http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/blog ... log=491031 but sold it as it never got used.
The plan for the Toledo is to fit the Sprint engine and up rate the suspension and brakes without modifying the shell to use it for road rallies and Club events.

Welcome to the Forum. Nice little car :)

To be pedantic, our cars are normally termed as 2 or 4 door as a saloon rather than a hatchback.

You'll actually have to work very hard to find wheels that suit better than the Sprint alloys. They may seem common on here but on the road, they are still a rare site and look great. Not convinced by the modern alloys.....

I quite like the multi spokes in the last picture. Would look good in black I think.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Thanks for the nice welcome message, I apologise for the obvious mistake.

I was just checking the wheels for clearance, I agree that they are too modern. I think the Dolomite wheels do look good but my own preference is some Minilites. Nice car by the way Alolympic.

Hello and a warm welcome to the forum from here in one of those bits of the country where there's no snow yet.

Minilites are, IMHO, a pretty wheel that looks good on a '70s car but another favourite option that's currently enjoying something of a renaissance is the good old slot mag.

Another member has a set of slots on his Toledo, cool or what:

Or you could go for these:

which look like this:
Image
when they're fresh from the boxes they come in. Thanks to member Alan "Dolowighty" for that image in the recent "Show us your Toledo" thread.

BUT...... Much as I've criticised the ubiquitous Sprint alloys for their being so, erm; ubiquitous, the fact is that they fit (with the correct special nuts of course), won't present you with any clearance or offset problems and are pretty much of the period.
The French blue 2 door that belonged to club chairman and aficionado of tasteful classic motors - Mr M. Bellinger, shows just how good those Sprint wheels can look.
Here's the car that he had:

Now even I couldn't imagine any other wheel that would suit that car better, he wrote, in an uncharacteristic display of objectivity. 8)

I must admit, that is a very nice car, I had a set of old wolf race wheels that went with my tr7, they might have looked ok. I like the look of the steel Gt6 wheels on a Toledo also. The interesting thing is that the wheels are probably the last thing on my list of things to do to the car and yet that's the talking point.

 Yeah, seems we're funny that way!

I like the fact that it's a relatively early example too. Come to think of it there's surely very little about the Toledo that's not likeable. They're cheap to run, they look good and they're not ridiculously overpriced in the way that Escorts, minis and BMC A60-shaped Farina bodied cars are now.
Get them while they're still cheap, it can't last.

On the subject of minis, any chance of some pics of yours please? And the Lancia, and the Lada Niva, haven't seen one of those since 5th gear tested one a couple of months ago.

Is the GRP mini a Venezuelan Cord-built one by any chance? A miniCord is pretty much top of my want list. Looks stock bar the stuck-on gutters, can't rot away completely, again; what's not to like?

I will take some pictures tomorrow whilst I'm working on the Toledo. The fibreglass mini is still a project, it needs a tubular frame as it is just a body at the moment too many projects and not enough time.

A nice 2 door Tolly Bryce, and an interesting looking fleet.

Welcome to the forum. I am well known for my love of the two door shape - I think the car actually looks better with the longer front doors and the rear pillar detail was beautifully resolved. There is the added advantage that the shell is considerably lighter and stiffer than a four door, so with the right bits in they do go rather better.

Sprint into Toledo has been done many times and is well documented - all the information that you need will be available here. Other power units have also been used, like my old car.

Whatever you decide to do, its nice to see another 2 door preserved, and do enjoy the car.
Martin.

A very pretty Toledo you have there.

On the subject of wheels, I always think that these look great..

Thanks, I am not the biggest fan of the Sprint engine but I would like to keep everything Triumph. I have considered other engines and when I replace the sub-frame I might look at other options for the future. I was just looking at the blue car above and noticed the shorter bumpers, are these what the original bumpers should look like?

On a very early Toledo, yes. Doubtless Alan (DoloWIGHTY) - the forum's resident guru where things Toledo are concerned - will be along at some point to confirm the exact date but I'm thinking that the wraparound type with added corner shoes must have been introduced during 1971.
