Painting the black bits - what to use?
I've started grabbing all the things that need to be shiny and black on PRO and I'm bringing them back to the house to paint. I don't know what to use though. My previous efforts in brush painting bits of the car with hammerite were "functional" but I'd like them to be pretty too. And ideas?
Options worth considering imo:
a) Por15
b) powder coat
Por 15 is good and cheaper but not cheap. A right arse ache to do properly tho. Wire brush, wash in marine clean, dip in metal ready, apply one or two coats of Por15 and you need a coat of chassis black as well if daylight will ever fall on it. See the instructions on the por15 site.
My advice is get a quote for powder coating, you may be surprised. I got a whole set of spitfire front end bits done a while back from small brackets & dust shields up to the ARB, 25 items iirc. Just under a ton plus the Viscously Added Tax for shotblasting (the small bits just get chucked in a tumbler which does the same job and keeps the cost down), zinc coating and black coating. Bloody bargain if you ask me. There was a full day just of wire brushing doing them by hand plus the hassle of retrieving at least one small part from 4 gardens away after the grinder brush launches it 'cos it's too small to hold securely.
Por 15 is probably the most economic option for the subframe and diff casing, the less fiddly bits of a decent area. Mrs Weevil recently did the new rear subframe for her mini (a lot less complex than a sprint frame) and it is good gear. She used up a starter kit plus half a tin of chassis black.

Powder coating
Recently I had my Sprint subframe, all the front and rear suspension arms, springs, anti-roll bars, brake dust shields, spring top caps, and a host of other little bits and pieces done for £100. Saved me loads of time. Now I just have to put it all back together ....

Shotblasting
Tin, I used AC Shotblasting in Newbury. They don't seem to answer the phone much. I just turned up with a boot full of bits and agreed a price and collection time there and then. It seems to take about a week. If you ever want any stuff doing, just drop it round at my place and I'll take it in for you. I can just about squeeze in a trip during my lunch break or after work if I leave early enough.
