The angle grinder did admirably ;)

The weather will improve ( we hope) and the evenings are getting longer....

I thank you, as far as persistence is concerned, ive been into minis for 7 years, ive seen people go to far more effort to bring back something theoretically not worth bringing back, changing half the panels on the car in the process. In fact im going to have to on my project cars. Plus, it only cost me 100 quid, and even if it cost me an extra £1000 to get it on the road i still think thats worth it for A) the sort of car it is, and B) for the knowledge that i know ive sorted a tonne of stuff that i might have to sort anyway on a £1200 ebay purchase for example, in fact i did with my '77 mini 1000.

Im waffling already, but im sure you get my drift, better fix it and use it than to let it become yet another parts donor for something else or another part of the scrap pile.

I did a tiny bit earlier, the disc shields dried quicker than i expected so i bolted them onto the stub axles and painted the bolt heads, little and often and all that.

Jono, it did spend six years with the passenger side in a hedge! Nice solid boot floor though :)

When you reattach teh calipers to the stub exles its worth putting some copaslip on the bolts,

Dolly caliper pistons are quite prone to sticking. I've had one of these bolts round off and it was right pane to remove it.

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.

I thought I mentioned it? :P

That's why one half was slime and mould when I got it, and the other side flat as!

Yeah i'll make sure i do, mine did round off, my dad had to remove it with a chisel and in the process it knackered one of the calipers.

Getting some replacements on sunday!

Well, finally got a parts run in!

Made my way up to Bournemouth in a suspect car in appalling weather, but a 'can do' attitude will get you anywhere.

Slightly terrifying journey on the way there because the rain was torrential, and my £1.11 garden center special wiper blade couldnt really keep up. Plus, being that this is england, everyone appears to be in a rush, including the 42 seater coach i was tailgated by! Way back was similar, except i couldnt see anything! I can drive long distances without incident easily, its just rain teamed with others thats the problem

Once i'd arrived i managed to get calipers and braided hoses off the car without much of a hitch. Then proceeded to do this:

Image

That should sort my front end nicely!

Eventually came away with rear shoes, door cappings, calipers and hoses and air filters among other things.

Then, on a side note, i was offered a scooter. We even managed to get it into the car with some persuasion! (among all the bits, a full size trolley jack, and a hefty collection of tools)

Image

Although without wanting to sound gushing, i cannot recommend Jim (2drToledo) enough, need any bits, go to him! Kind, curteous, helpful and reasonable.

All in all, bar the dire travel a good day, should see a lot of the car sorted to say the least.

I've had a few bits from Jim too, sound bloke.
Watching this with interest, I'm not too far away, same year and it's the same colour mine was!
1978 Twilight Purple Dolomite 1850HL The Lolomite.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

Hi all, tiny update.

Didnt actually get anything done because i spent all day trying to get that scooter running, but this is how the trip saw me kitted out.

Got this while i was down there, anyone got any more they will let go?

This is how the parts haul sits me:

Image

Theres also the valance and door cappings out of shot.

Should see a large chunk of the front end sorted, just waiting on the car i partially dismantled to drop its subframe then i'll have some ball joints on the way and providing i dont find any further hidden rust up front then thats the front end sorted.

Hopefully rebuild the calipers tomorrow!
