Engine number
Engine number
Hi, I'm new to the forum, read it a lot and intend to use it more. I'm restoring a sprint with my son (will post pics when I find out how). I have bought an 1850 with sprint running gear and I just need someone to confirm about the engine block I have as I need an engine for my sprint. It has a sprint head on it and hopefully its a sprint block. Is there any way of telling or won't a sprint head fit an 1850. I have numbers on the block like 9M7 V3103 BD5 ISSUE17 and NW. Appreciate any help, thanks.
IIRC The blocks themselves as I understand are the same bar the cylinder liners, which would need to be the right size for the combustion chamber to work. If it's running with a Sprint head on it, it's a sprint block.
A good place to put any pictures is http://www.triumphowners.com , you can link to them from there and it's handy to keep a record of what you've done.

Look between the carbs, if you are lucky, on the horizontal shelf of the block beneath there will be an engine number. It will have prefix of VA if its genuine Sprint.
Whilst it is not that straightforward to fit a Sprint head to 1850 block, if one is fitted and it works...no worries, its now a Sprint! (just check there is a duplex timing chain by taking the oil filler off and looking in...)

Block wise....
the only difference is tha capacity and this is a bore change...
An 1850 block could be bored out to sprint/tr7 size. Everything else is common bar pistons and head. There are a few other bits like end plates and mountings. You could use an 1850 sub frame and mountings with a sprint block but it would sit too high and probably bounce on the bonnet.
If its been done well it should have the sprint sub frame and steady bar.
I cant seen engine numbers on any of my mixed fleet and Ive got just about every permutation possible of slant 4 dolomite.
