Northern Ireland Registrations?
Northern Ireland Registrations?
This thread has been sparked by the article in DM about the rally Toledo.....
You can identify a Northern Ireland registration by its three letters (the second always being I) followed by up to 4 numerals.
How it is possible to use these in Britain?
I am the third owner of a Dolomite (1850).
It was sold new in Northern Ireland and subsequently came to Scotland in 2005. The new owner had to take it to the Edinburgh Licensing Office to get
it registered. It did show a first registration date of 1/1/2006 but this has now been amended to 14/9/72
along with the inclusion of a record of its previous NI registration (which no longer exists).
A friend has a NI registration but this was transferred from a taxed/MOTd Marina so she knows nothing about the registration process. At that time (20 years ago) the police handled transfers.
I am thinking the NI licence must be current when the car arrives in Britain, in order to retain the NI number?
Thanks,
Ian.

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Hmmm, must be mine your on about.
As far as i know(dvla),i have to register it at my local office(chester) as the car is from northern ireland.
To do this the car has to have a current m.o.t,tax(which is exempt) and insurance. After i have sent the documents in i will be asked if i would like to keep the registration currently on it or change it for an age related plate.I will probably keep the irish plate on the car as its part of its history.
It is awaiting welding and then an m.o.t so that i can then send everything away.I hope he gets a move on because the tax runs out at the end of march and(even though its free) would probably give me another headache with the people at chester.
1, it would be mot`d insured but not taxed and not registered in my name
2, i would then be asking for the logbook to be changed from 4 door to 2 door
My heads hurting already
I will have a look for the letter dvla sent me to clear things up

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Right, just found the reply from dvla.
Their response was to a letter i sent telling them of my trip to ireland to buy the tolly and the error on the logbook and my info on the car by its previous owners.I had enclosed the logbook /info/pics and the kind letter sent to me from its rallying ex owner Gary.
Their response was:
Dear maximus
Thank you for your application to register your vehicle.
This vehicle is registered at dva northern ireland and is not currently held on the dvla system(this is why the mot`er needed the logbook, see Dm).
To register your vehicle you will need to take or send this letter along with the following documents to your nearest dvla office:
.a current motor insurance certificate
.a current m.o.t
.the required fee for the vehicle tax*if applicable
.your northern ireland registration certificate
After recieving this letter i phoned dvla and explained that it wasnt m.o.t`d and that it would require work.I asked if i could register it in my name as it seemed crazy having the car over in the uk but it being registered in ireland still.
The reply:
"No sir it has to have tax m.o.t and insurance before you can register it in your name."
This was when she told me about keeping the reg or replacing it with a uk age related plate.
Hope this helps.
Since having the car, no work has been done from me and its in the middle of being welded.I wrote the article and submitted it to Dm and didnt want to put a post up about the car as i felt it might have spoilt the article. Also only having the car a week or so before sending it off to the welder and not actually getting to do work on it i thought starting a post was a bit premature.Hopefully soon i will start a post but looking at some of the fabulous posts of work being done by members puts me to shame a bit as i feel im not even in their league when it comes to restoring/modding(you clever blokes know who you are
).I suppose its all about having a bit of fun and keeping them on the road that counts. When i start a post about the car im not too sure if its ok to replicate the article in Dm,slightly changing or adding bits as i remember them or if this would be considered naughty(Rob?).As i said before i didnt post anything as i considered it premature and also i wanted people who contribute to the club to read it first

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Re a resto thread I would say publish and be damned as it were...
If we get into a place where only top quality work is acceptable on the resto thread I think it will be all the poorer for it.
Dont be embarrassed. If you've got some pics and something to say then put it on...
We need ALL ability levels is my feeling and nobody should be ashamed of their work...
My 2 cents...

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
I live in and am from Northern Ireland.
We over here CAN tell the age of the car by its reg. Indeed the reg system is EXACTLY the same as that used up until 2001 on the mainland.
How you ask?
Simple. Lets take the NI Plate YIW2245
Y is the approx year of reg. In this case 2000
IW is the county, in this case Londonderry
2245 is the 2245 car registered that year on a county Londonderry plate.
Now, lets turn it on its head and relate this back to the mainland
WYA668M
W was originally the year, (back in the day before prefix) BUT due to a much bigger population, you guys soon needed to move to prefix (We have not needed to as yet)
Due to prefix, the W is now largely redundant. YA is the county. Taunton I think. 668 is the number of the car, and finally the M prefix denotes the year. 1974
So there you go. Same thing really. All UK reg's, be they NI or mainland are legal in all parts of the UK.
The problem is that NI reg's are normally issued by our local dvla office in Coleraine, not by swansea.
SO, if a car has been re-taxed at swansea on its NI reg, and this is then let expire, all Swansea can do is to re-issue an age related mainland mark (due to northern ireland counties not being issued by them)
If you have access to an NI address, it is possible to use this and have Coleraine, not Swansea re-issue you with an age related NI reg mark.
Simples?

Just someone stupid at the other end. I regularly register swansea cars with no tax and no mot remaining at coleraine. The opposite is equally possible.
Okay ........
Many thanks Yellowmitch,
that has cleared it up for me.
Ian.
PS I agree with Jonners, there is most definitely a place for all on the forum

Not the case. My own car begins IUI and the girlfriends begins INZ. Also my fathers car begins BKZ and his motorbike RXI

It didnt sound right at the time but i had sent the documents off then spoke to dvla.Must have caught them on a bad dayyellowmitch wrote:Bullshit.maximus wrote: The reply:

Does seem strange that you can buy a car and the dvla dont want to know who the new owner is until the car meets the legal requirements.I might have been driving it illegally, just think of the fines they would have missed out on

As for starting a post,i passed the garage where the car is and didnt spot it in the compound it was residing

Unless someones robbed or scrapped it

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Your lucky the car has survived.
If you left a car with Irish plates parked in the seventies it got the attention of the bomb squad.
My Quantum has an irish reg and I like it cos its unusual!

There is now talk of closing Coleraine and moving everything to Swansea

Re: Northern Ireland Registrations?
Yes, northern Irelands database is now shared with Swansea. This made getting the logbook so much easier as all I had to do was nip into the post office after the car was mot`d, tax it and get them to send the logbook off for me.
