Urgent electrical help needed!

I currently have no tachometer and even worse NO inidcators on my 1500HL!!!

Next friday I shall be traveling from Liverpool to Chester and I don't want to do this without indicators.

Over the past months occasionally the tachometer would just stop intermitently for a few seconds, then start again, but last time it went off It hasn't come on again. I am thinking a loose connection is the fault but, am unsure. Help on the matter would be most usefull.

Check out the connections in the fuse box. Its always the fuse box....

Indicators and tacho are on the same fuse, aren't they?

Yep, what they said. The acid test without getting out of the car is....ask yourself this...do the windscreen wipers work?

If you've lost indicators and rev counter,you'll most likely have lost the brake lights too.
If it isn't a bad contact on the ignition switch fed fuse,you need to be checking the connections where the green wires leave the fusebox. A good clean up with wire wool etc is usually needed.

Yes, as has been said; 99% the fuse its contacts or the green wires. .4 of them.
In addition if all the following circuits have failed its the "Ignition On " fuse or the contacts.....
Fuel gauge,
Water temp gauge
Heater blower
Brake lights
Heated rear window
Windscreen washers
Wipers
Reverse lights
Over drive
Indicators.
Now if it is just the Indicators and rev; counter that have failed there is a quirk in the wiring.
The green wire for these 2 items goes into a splice in the green wires, and comes out as one wire to the rev; counter, which then goes to the indicators. I suppose it saved a couple of pence in running 2 wires.
So just a chance the internal splice has failed or the green wire to the rev counter has broken.
Do the hazard flashers work ? That tells you the basic bulb circuitry is OK.

Yes these are all off, but I am stumped as I have cleaned each contact very carefully, and inspected the fuse (which is fine)
but still not working!

All is very conFUSEing. Some fuses from the make littlefuse look ok but are not. The little fuse wire inside is loose from the metal ends. So it looks ok but is not.

Tim, if you are still having problems:
- remove all the connections into/out of the fuse box
- remove the fuse box
- properly clean all the metal components, using wet and dry
- make sure the fuse holders are nice and firm
- replace fuse box
- fit new fuses
- clean up all connections
- refit these

I had intermittent faults for over a year until I completely took apart and properly cleaned the fuse box and all its elements. Now fine.

I did use wet and dry on the fuse box and now have lovely shiney contact points!

unfortunatly I have no spare fuses at present as it could well be a disconected wire at one end.

How many of you will I upset if I shove in a bolt instead of the fuse JUST to see if it is the fuse?

As Jeroen says, the fuses themselves can be faulty. I had one that looked O.K. until I gently twisted the end-caps and it went "plink" and the fuse wire that had not been soldered properly became detatched.

Just to re-cap, none of the electrics that should be working with the IGN ON are doing so and the fuse and the green wires are O.K.

So we now go to the input side of the fuse. There are 2 white wires on the input side.
Since the engine is running, the one that runs to the coil / electronic ignition or whatever is O.K.
So, do the handbrake light and the choke light work O.K. ? These are on the unfused side of the IGN ON circuits.
That would then reduce the problem to the white wires and their connections to the fuse box.
Can you check for ~13V on the input side of the fuse actually on the fuse with the engine running ?

I take it you do have the standard 2-fuses Triumph fuse box and not the 4-Fuse MGB style box ?
(There is another problem with the 4-fuse MGB style fuse box with the internal links behind the fuse box you can't see from the front .)

Hi, yes the Choke light and Handbrake lights BOTH WORK and it is just 2 fuses in the box

No need for that. Just swapping the fuses over would do it - provided that the other fuse is good of course.
If it is the fuse,I'd get a couple of spares when you buy new ones. There is a holder for them in the fusebox.

Thanks for the Help everyone, swapped the fuses over and everything started working again :D

Shall order some new ones now!!
