Dodgy light sequence on startup

#1 Post by David6214 »

I reckon this could be a dodgy earth, but since I'm short of time at home (but can find some at work) I thought I'd ask you guys....

Connect the battery - IGN light comes on
Put the key in the ignition and turn
IGN light goes off, Oil light comes on
Turn to starter position
IGN still off, Oil still on, Starter not on.

Never had this one running before, but it was MOt'd until 4 months ago. Got to be something simple...

You haven't got the leads mixed up on the fuse box per chance?

I'll check them mart, but if I did, then the ignition one would stay on permanently wouldn't it as it would bypass the ign switch....rather than going off as soon as the key is turned.

Red light on when battery connected means trouble in alternator. Disconnect alternator plug and it should go out...if it does its the alternator...if it still stays on, hmmm dodgy switch....or dodgy wiring.
The other symptoms yuou describe are likely to be dody steering column switch. Substiuting a spare one form the connector on the steering column back is good for diagnostic purposes

Ok, alternator disconnected, light goes out. The starter doesn't fire, but I'm not sure whether it needs the alternator connected. I don't think it can do though....possible dodgy solenoid or something as well, but there isn't even a click.

Battery fully charged.
