Liner replacement
I was deglazing a Sprint engine block at the restoration show on Sunday but no. 3 bore was too far gone to just deglaze it, it needs a rebore or a new liner. I was speaking with an old guy who said he used to remove/replace liners on lots of BMC stuff. I've since watched a few videos on Youtube (I seen some dodgy ones) & was just wondering is it within the realms of the DIY enthusiast to do this, with the correct tool? Is it just a matter of replacing the liner or would the liner need to be honed out afterwards?

Re: Liner replacement
I seem to remember there was a how to guide in one of the classic mags recently. The problem is that you will probbaly struggle to get it out on your bench. It's not like a K Series liner where it will just fall out so probably best to get a shop to do it for you. They can then assess the bore before fitting and honing a new liner. Normally they bore them really thin and then they fall apart, at least that's what my engine shop said.
Lined blocks seem quite unusual so are you sure it has been previously lined?

Thanks Mark. As far as I know, all Sprint blocks have liners.

Re: Liner replacement
All ENGINES have liners, the difference is only between a "wet" liner as in the TR2-4 and K series (and millions of Pugs and Renaults) where the liner is a separate, removeable piece but still with a polished inner liner shrunk into a cast tube. The other choice is a "dry" liner where the cast tube is integral with the block and the liner (really just a thin tube of high grade molybdynum or chrome steel) is shrunk directly into it. This is what all "our" engines use and the majority of others as well.

Re: Liner replacement
All my sprint blocks and the others i have seen had never any liners in them. A methode to get liners out is to mig weld some lines in them and then cool down and they become loose by shrink.

Re: Liner replacement
Sprint blocks do NOT have liners from new, neither do most cast iron blocks. If a block has been fitted with a liner, it is a reclamation exercise to salvage an otherwise scrap block.
Fitting a liner to a sprint block is not a DIY job.
