Was my car registered before it was manufactured?

For everything to do with Dolomites, Toledos, FWD cars and Dolomite-based kitcars.

Was my car registered before it was manufactured?

#1 Post by Ian Wilkes »

Hello all,

The recent budget news and my Sprint's impending 40th next year have prompted me into the loft to check the history files. I obviously didn't look properly when I first received the previous owner data from the DVLA when I purchased the car in the 90's because on closer inspection it appears that the date of registration is three months before the car was built. (Poor quality photo attached)

Could that be right or is it more likely to be a typo?

Ian

DVLA records are occasionally incorrect.

You get registered before sold on new manufacture, but I can't see how you can have registered before built.

I would get a Heritage cert from Gaydon from your chassis number.

Then there is no argument about the car's real age.

Not possibly because a car is registered to a chassis (vin) number which isn't issued until the car leaves the production line
I would say the build date is wrong as would the factory be operating on 31st Dec?

What does the V5C state for first reg date?
Some people are like Slinky's, they serve no real purpose in life but bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Thanks for your replies.

The date registered is correct according to the V5 - I've ordered a heritage certificate so hope to have the mystery solved in 28 days or so...

Things like this are nearly always a cock-up dating from the 1974-1983 DVLA computerisation!
1978 Triumph Dolomite Sprint (project thread)
1966 Volkswagen 1300 (project thread)
1962 Austin Mini (project)
1962 MGA 1600 Mark II
1965 Mobylette SP50 (project)
2001 Rover 75 2.5-litre V6

Just to close this off...

Heritage certificate says it was built 14/05/75 and dispatched a month later.

Thanks again for the advice.
