Alternative 1850 Air Filters
The original style are getting harder to find at reasonable prices, and even £16 per pair I think is over the top for an air filter!
Has anyone fitted alternatives (I'm not keen on the K&N types)?

They're the same as the Mk2 Triumph 2000 (GFE1059) if that helps. You should be able to source them for a reasonable price.

Have to say they are one of those most prolific things I have seen relating to the Dolomite at autojumbles, often going for around £1 each, both varieties, the SU and the Stromberg (with the slot up the back). Maybe I should be stocking up if they are drying up?

I have pondered using the original airbox and a large single filter (a la T2500S) but concluded that there isn't really
room because of the alternator and battery positions.
Pipercross make "universal" conical filters that are used extensively in the kit car world. One of these would be easier to site
but I haven't tried one to see how well it performs. (They are expensive if it does't do.........)
If I was going to get involved in fabricating air collector boxes I am inclined to think that I'd prefer to do so with a fuel injection
setup (to allow an LPG conversion). Meanwhile I'll stick with the conventional air filters.

Could you take the dimensions of the filter - then check against the drop down table on the link below. Might be able to fit inside the OEM air box.

That's a good shout, I'll do that at the weekend. It wouldn't take many service intervals to get my money back.
I'll post the measurements up here. I guess it would need the carbs setting up again.

It looks like a pair of these: http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/produ ... rod=e-3180 These are the elements from their fancy chromed units, it should be possible to get them to fit inside the original air box.

He is also offering OE parts as an alternative to the "budget" offerings for those who are more
discerning.
Very often the cheapest turns out to be the most expensive option in the long run......

I never joke about money he said jokingly....
These are still listed in the FRAM trade catalogues. I cant see why they cat run a few more off...
Think I used to pay about 3 quid a pop at Maccess....
Now I'm on the stag tr7 sprint element so no longer need them.

I have bought some nos and compared them with Spitfire filters.
The Spitfire ones are the same diameter just slightly thinner (and a lot cheaper).
Don't know what this would do to performance though.

I picked up a pair of new 1850/TR7 K&N s for £55, all shiny and chrome.
The elements don't fit inside the standard airbox, not a hope, they are too thick.
I'll trial fit the K&Ns with their shiny pancake cases at the end of the summer and see what happens, then maybe see if a case can be modified. As Ian says, it's pretty close to the battery as it is.
