[quote="Edin Dundee"]insurance disc, car tax disc and MOT disc ALL displayed at set points on the windscreen, and readable by automatic cameras. And the human eye. Make it an offence against the driver and the owner if they can't be read by the cameras.

Maybe there should be a law that all cars had to some sort of plastic plate that had a a letter/ number combo clearly visible, this would be unique to each car and printed an approved easy to read font so it could be read by special cameras linked to a computer system.

I hear you - but how do WE HUMANS know the number plate satisfies the three rules of Tax, MOT and insurance? There are 64.1 million people in the UK, there won't ever be that number of cameras. Are they going to stick cameras on all the back roads?

Hamster wrote:I believe through ANPR there will now be a concentrated revenue raising exercise through fines and back excise, there are so many cameras trained on our roads now it will be a simple case of instantly checking, and issuing fixed penalties for no tax, mot or insurance for every vehicle used on the road.

The police don't get any revenue from untaxed car even although they do the stopping and paperwork for the car to be impounded if the car is driven on the road.
All the fines (except the impound and storage fee that the tow company get) and back duty go to the DVLA so the police don't actually have any incentive to stop untaxed cars although most that are driven untaxed are also not insured/ driver doesn't have a licence/ used in crime.
The council/ highways agency cameras that you see on the main roads and motorways are not ANPR but just basic cameras.
You will however see more DVLA and agency cars roaming the streets with ANPR cameras that will be clamping car that are parked up or sending letters through the post saying your car was seen used on the road and please donate some money to the DVLA.

easy to check online and ANPR police cars do use ALL the roads not just motorways, there doesn't need to be one camera per car just the one cameras that that car drives past and as they are mobile you can never know where they will be, yes the system isn't perfect but then you could also say that every building should have a copper outside in case it gets burgled or every person should have a cop walk with them in case they get mugged. it will never happen.

ANPR can be applied to any camera, so long as the definition is sufficient, through software on the computer that receives the image. Trafficmaster for example could easily be awarded an agency contract.

Fair point Alun, it could happen but there are no plans in the pipeline for it.
