Can anyone suggest an OBD doo dah for me please? I have a 2003 Volvo V70 & I want to be able to reset the service indicator and figure out why it's got it's engine warning light on. Should I go for a cheap chinese ebay handheld and if so how much do I need to spend in order to minimise the time spent swearing at it? Or would a laptop/android interface type be better? I'm cautious of anything Android as some appear to be just a cable that a hooks you into expensive software.

I wouldnt use android cos its just about suitable for a phone or sat nav.
Navigating OBDC menus is much better with a proper keyboard. Get one for your laptop.

I have a middle of the road OBD widget, made by Blue point, a Snap-on subsidiary, it cost me £200 which is not cheap, but it does do just about any car (engine diagnostic only) with EOBDII and doesn't need to be updated like the posher and very expensive (£1.5-2k) machines. Its very simple and intuitive to use, gives a definition of the code, not just a number and also displays live data though the amount of this captured seems to vary depending on make and model of the car being worked on.

Julian would OP-COM work with your Volvo? It plugs into the OBD port and connects to a laptop via the USB port. I've been thinking about getting one to use on my Astra and it is the next best thing to what the dealers use (Tech2). Have you tried looking on the Volvo forums for any info? Most service indicators can be reset by holding the trip reset button down and then turning on the ignition or a similar such combination.

Obd and OBD ii are a common interface used in all modern cars. There are US legal requirements that all modern cars should have this interface.
The can bus is also used by most car manufacturers, but is more or less the ethernet cabling in your car, the messages across the bus might differ per brand.
Over the obd interface several standard parameters can be requested, but manufacturers can add their own proprietary set too.
