Noise at the front end
Noise at the front end
My sprint is a bit clattery on start up. It seems like timing chain noise but disappears as the engine warms up. Is this possible ? I would have thought it would stay clattery if it were the chain. Its a newish bottom end and the head I have done myself any suggestions welcome.
Re: Noise at the front end
It can be a bit of piston slap, but having just had to replace the cam tensioner on mine (Rolon crap) installed by the PO = I wouldn't be too hopeful

get the cam cover off and see if there is play in the chain, and keep checking, much cheaper than valve to piston contact when the chain lets go

Do you know how many miles you have on that engine 73Sprint?
Timing chain life with OE spec bits is about 80 k miles.

Oh yes, mind you the bits inside the engine were secured with nice shiny none oem stainless bolts ! - they have gone in the bin together with the rolon tensionerJon Tilson wrote:Oh no Mike not you as well?

Re: Noise at the front end
I got an ebay seller to pull his Rolon tensioners becuase of this. Its in another thread -
"credit where credit is due"
I have used Rolon tensioners a good few years ago with no reported issues. I think it must
only be a recent batch that have this problem, but its happened at least 5 times now.
I just hope the body work on your car proves better long term than the mechanical stuff.

Only about 1500 got it done by s&s approx 3 years ago run carefully not happy if it is piston slap as it was a fair bit of money.

Re: Noise at the front end
That is within the timeframe of tensioners that have caused trouble.
Not saying it is that as the fan viscous drive could also be clattering. Easy test is to try it without the fan belt.
If its quiet then you know it isnt the timing chain.
