VINYL ANSWER...

#1 Post by hutch76 »

Had coachtrimmer round the other day. He reckons that to find replacement material with same/similar grain will be very difficult. Reckons that about the only stuff available is the Ford pebble dash material (obviously a no go), or Rolls Royce have a similar type available, but is rather expensive-surprise surprise!

Anyone source acceptable replacements recently?

NB. Was the grain a bit heavier on later cars?

try boyriven ltd 01264 771414 ,they call the type of vinyl you want Automotive topping and the type used on bl cars is black 5659 127cm wide.
The type used on fords is black 5609 132cm wide.
you should use heat resistant adhesive,Dunlop s1358 is good,
hope the above is of service. :D

Thanks Bifold. Fitting is going to be down to the coachtrimmer! Up to him to make sure the seams etc are ok.

Do you know if they do different colours? Not putting black back on.

EV hooding is short for Everflex hooding 137cm wide, comes in11 colours OE for Rollsroyce,on a folding hood you have to allow 2%for shrinkage, but on a stick down car roof the choice of a good adhesive is a must(any slack looks crap).boyriven sells everflex hooding.at least you can compare prices.
If you wanted a blackroof I would stick to automotive topping as this is the corect OE material 8)

I'm sure this is what we used on Red Richie's Motor at the Resto Show in late 2006. No seams post mid 78 build (although most were 79T 79 V
or 80 V onwards registered)

Thanks for that Malc. WTH was registered 1st Nov.'78, and currently has seams on the roof. Currently waiting on Heritage Certificate to arrive, as have some suspicions that it may have been re-shelled at some point.

Martrim were very helpful, and seem to have quite a few colours available, so fingers crossed they have what I want.

Will probably be giving you a phone next week Malc. as still working on the shopping list. Have managed to avoid, and intend continuing to avoid, my favourite suppliers so far btw!

Interesting on the seems / reshell front. Pageant was a 'later colour' the early being Tahiti 75,76,77 and into a few 78 registered's. Pageant I've always had down as 79T onwards colour. IIRC I can't recall seeing any Pageants with seams in the roof. Of course, post build and 30 years on, anything is possible and the originality becomes blurred. I'll check, but something like VA26000 ish was May 79 and that was seemless which than ran through the TWA.........T range of commission numbers

Here's what's on it Malc:
Image

VIN is VA260**DLO

Have various old MOT's from late '80s stating colour as yellow. Believe me, i've been EVERYWHERE on the car, there's no yellow anywhere. Also, have various old garage receipts stating repairs to o/s chassis leg. Both chassis legs are the same as all the underside, perfect with no repairs anywhere.

On the plus side, it's the perfect base for what i'm doing. I guess I've got both a pedigree and a mongrel now?

Very impressed with Martrim. Phoned them Friday, and package arrived today, filled with samples.

Vinyl roof material is spot on, for anyone seeking to replace theirs.
