1500 FWD Front Bearings

#1 Post by dalbuie »

So the car is running well :D, changed all the hoses as they were a bit cracked, full service and a good clean up of the carb and I'm really enjoying being out and about in her.

There is however a bit of a rumble from the nearside front so I'm suspecting front wheel bearings. On reading the manual this looks like a straightforward job - although does mean removing the nearside prop and doing it all on the bench.

Before I set aside a Saturday to do this I was wondering if there are any hints and tips and other than the bearing set and maybe a rotoflex joint anything else I should change while in there? Also I suppose I should do both sides?

Cheers

Hi there.

FWD wheel bearings can be straight forward to do, so long as you have the right skills and tools to do the job properly. It's just a matter of getting the right amount of end float. you can either do this with the correct Churchill setting tool or using a dial indicator, using the appropriate spacers and shims to obtain the correct end float.

I've done it both ways but I prefer the latter method.

Also when reassembling, if you are using rubber seals rather than the original leather ones, make sure the inner seal is making contact with the sealing diameter on the CV joint, due to this diameter being tapered the two sometimes don't meet. This can be resolved by putting the seal in backwards, some seal is better than no seal !

Many thanks.

Talking about the right tools does anyone hire/sell the Churchill S109C puller. Everyone recommends getting the right tool for this.

The other option is anyone who does an exchange service - unlikely now I know :-)
