Bass fishing/light beachcaster.......?

#1 Post by sprint95m »

I am interested in buying a light beachcaster/heavy bass fishing rod.

Requirements:
3.35-3.66 m (11-12') overall length, 2 piece
casting weight 90-150g (but mostly 120g/4 oz and occasionally 150g/5oz)
(proper) Fuji rings for a fixed spool reel
screw fitting reel seat
must be light enough for handheld use

I believe there are (still) British manufacturers of high quality so prefer to choose one of these.

Has anyone any suggestions or experience please?

thanks,

Ian.

Good for you trying to support British industry.
I went for what I considered the best in 1976, this model is the heavier end of the Atlantic range.
Almost 40 years later it's still going strong (it's had several sets of rings) and beats the pants off anything else I've tried.
Unfortunately it's Swedish: http://www.tradera.com/item/302201/2145 ... lantic-480.
I bought an Abu 9000c reel a couple of years later - it still works, but is showing signs of its age!

Good luck with your search, I fear you may struggle to find a sea rod at a reasonable price from a UK manufacturer.

Extremely decadent I know it is for sure,
I am going for a Zziplex Powertex Bass rod :) .

(Yes I know the top section is 8 feet long, but it will fit into a Dolomite.......
tried a length of wood to confirm this before ordering. One end on back upper seat, other on the parcel shelf. It won't roll around :D ...)

Well.......

Managed to find a Zziplex rod for sale, it was delivered to the local Argos saving me about £23 in carriage.
Being a blank rod I had to source eyes, thread, a reel seat, hand grips, etc.
So the total build price was not far shy of £300.

How does it perform?

Really really well.
Tried it out yesterday and caught a fish with each of my first two casts :D !
Followed by a bigger one and a few small ones that I returned.

:D Had the saithe (bottom in photo) for tea, cooked in oven with oatmeal mixed with soy sauce.
The two Lyth (or Pollack) I hot smoked today. The bigger was about 2kg I guess being 54cm long.
All caught on an 115mm Eddystone eel.

This was the view from the rocks......
