So my 'N' reg Dolly is 40 (I think) this year (the V5 beeds checking to confirm) but how does the tax exemption process work?! Will my car be tax free this year?!

Anyone been through this phase?

Ok, so on that basis I need to wait two more years for it to qualify?
Before 1/1/74 no good - now 2015
Before 1/1/75 no good (it's a '75 car) 2016
Before 1/1/76 (tax free) 2017

I thought it was build date rather than registration date? some cars sat around for a long time before being sold, so there is some hope . A heritage certificate or other reliable source is needed.

No and no! My M reg Toledo, registered 11/1/ 74 and built 3/12/73 has been tax free since last April.
From April 1st this year cars BUILT before 1/1/75 will qualify, this includes cars registered on an N plate between 1/8/74 and 31/12/74 + 7 days grace (or later with a heritage cert to confirm 74 build)
I had to get a heritage certificate to prove mine since it was registered 4 days past the end of the 74 grace period but it was still worth it, cost £40 to save £225!
So you have to wait either 3 months or 15 months, its time to do some research!

Thanks Steve,
I've just completed an on line enquiry with The Heritage Company to ascertain build date (£6), a heritage certificate will follow pending this outcome.

Thanks! :)
