Agreed that a good go with a machine polisher and some cutting compound (not t-cut, too mild) may do the trick. At worst you will not make much of an improvement or will go through the paint to the primer. Then you will have lost some time and effort but not much else, and will still need a respray.
If you are keen on selling though, I would be advertising it as is. Many people want just such a car, and would be suspicious that a fresh respray may be hiding all sorts of nasties. At the moment it is totally honest, and all can see that.

I'd say £2500 if you take all the trims off windows out, handles off etc.

Right, plan now is to spend a couple of hundred getting the paint polished and sealed by a professional detailer who did my Alfa.
