Worst bit of car telly ever....strong candidate.

#1 Post by Jon Tilson »

Don't know about you guys but I thought that tonite's channel 5 classic car program was one of the
worst car telly programs I have ever seen.

I normally like Jodie Kid but quite honestly how she could waffle on vacuously about the ferrari california while imparting zero
information would have had fearne cotton lost in admiration...

Quentin was a self opinionated boring prat of epic proportions, rubbishing his colleague in a totally unprofessional way.
How could he possibly think that was good telly? I get more interesting opinions in the office...

And he was wrong. The TR7 bit wasn't great but was easily the best bit of the entire show.

And who was the idiot that thought a fashion show with 2 mercs driven by unter celebs I'd never seen before was a fitting
opener? Who were the boring celebs to comment about them? Norton didn't even know what the SL was....

I used to quite like the idea of a blower Bentley and hoped long may they stay 5k. I wouldnt be seen dead in one now i know he
rates them...

Utter rubbish...

Jonners...............calm down :)
Rebecca has found out already that the programe makers are just not car people and will not listen.

Take that Richard Wilson driving a Daimler V8 round UK one as an example :? he is a hopeless driver and Robbie Coltrane had done a similar show a few years ago that was really quite good but no more were made.

I personally thought the one Rebecca did was dire too but it was not her fault she did not source the cars but had to comment on some right dogs that she would not buy.

I still think Top Gear is a good watch but realise that most enthusiasts would not agree but it is more about entertainment than a car show but it does have hidden good bits.

The worst one that I have seen by a mile featured a couple of mouthy twats restoring very badly a red Jag E type..............I only saw a part of one episode and that was enough!

I know Fith Gear is back in the spring  and I will watch at least one episode :D but most likely all of them.

I really enjoyed the bit on the TR7, I have no idea who that fella was but his enthusiasm for the car was a joy to watch, I really want a TR7 in early spec (like the white one in the show) so was expecting the usual Clarksoness crap that's fashionable to spout about BL cars of the 7's era but found this report very refreshing and enjoyable.

On the whole I enjoyed the show, yes there's a mismatch of presenters but I enjoyed watching it.

The guy reporting on the TR7 is called Alex Riley and as you might have guessed he actually likes the cars. He did point out that the second one - the DHC - is his own personal car.
He was also recently on Celebrity Mastermind answering questions on the Triumph TR sportscars and he won it , so he does know a bit about them..

I'm afraid that with the exception of the TR7 piece, the rest of the programme was dire style without substance. Won't watch again

Hehe, that made me smile!! Now that was the worst car programme ever made I watched one episode and never watched it again...dire.

I've just watched the Channel 5 thing, and whilst I was expecting to hate it, I actually quite enjoyed it.

Once you realise that Quentin Wilson is a cock, at least he is a bit passionate, though didn't appreciate his thoughts on the TR7...we can't all afford a Knobby Lister like he can. It's people like us and the TR register et al, i.e. real enthusiasts, that keep Britain's classic car industry afloat. Go and ask Rimmer's charging 4 quid odd for a bolt....

It came across loud and clear that QW thinks classic cars are purely for making money with.....there won't be many normal people agreeing with that sentiment.

I would watch Jodie Kidd selling paint if I had to...t o t a l l y Lush and she could drive me to Tuscany in a classic Ferrari any time she wants to!!

My only real gripe was that I'm so not interested in 'celebrities' road testing a car, in London, that we in the real world will never have a chance of having a go in, never mind owning.

At least that little prick Hammond was no where near it so that is a huge plus point, and I will be watching again!

I totally agree with all Jonners said, for me the best bit was the TR7.The rest of the programme was all about far out of reach exotics,I know they have a place, but please have a programme about everyday, ordinary, affordable and useable classics.I will maybe tune in again next week to see if it improves,if not I wont bother with it anymore.PJB

I've seen the first episode and it isn't all that bad even though it mostly featured the high end cars.

What about Quentin Wilson's very early E-Type FHC? He's spent thousands on restoring it and I can't see him getting his money back despite all the history and provenance that he's managed to dig up. It is possible to make a profit if you buy at the right time and QW will know what to look out for. I saw this video where he chose a BMW E30 convertible over a Stag. I wonder which car he'd choose now. I don't think he's such a cock as he's made out to be. QW was a car dealer before his rise to fame so he does know a thing or two.

Jodie Kidd is eye candy as is Rebecca Jackson (you should be proud of her Jon. She's more than just a pretty face.)

I've come across Alex Riley when he was on The Caravan Show (I watched a lot of daytime telly when I was out of a job and when we still had Sky). Nice to know he's a real Triumph enthusiast with his very own TR7 DHC and he's a Yorkshireman which brings him up in my estimation. I know which side of the fence I'm on with the TR7.

The Cockney and Canadian are Bernie Fineman (he of Chop Shop fame) and Mario Pacione who did Classic Car Rescue (the episode featuring the E-Type was the 1st one).

Car SOS is a good watch featuring Fuzz Townshend and Tim Shaw. Fuzz was a staff writer for Practical Classics at one time and his father-in-law's MGB GT restoration was featured in the mag recently.

I don't think this is was as bad as some other people do. Remember, it isn't specifically a restoration or everyday classic program, hence the more exotic cars. Quentin and Jodie seem a little uncomfortable to me, but maybe they'll settle down a bit later in series. As for Quentin's opinion of the TR7, all may not be quite as it seems. In case you hadn't noticed, TV program makers love a bit of conflict, even if it isn't genuine. You'll have seen this sort of conflict, although quite subtle, between Philip Glenister and Ant Anstead on "For the Love of Cars" and rather over the top between Bernie and Mario in "Classic Car Rescue". You'll note that, although Bernie looks like he'll bust a blood vessel in every show, the two of them always end up driving into the sunset happily enough at the end of the show. So, no matter what Quentin's and Jodie's actual opinions of the TR7 might be, for the purposes of the show, they won't be allowed to agree. Also, the invitation for the audience to "vote" at the end of the item probably wouldn't work as well if the presenters agreed with each other, as the viewers couldn't take sides with one or the other then. From my admittedly limited experience of TV and radio, I would advise taking anything you see or hear with a pinch of salt. Apparently spontaneous acts have probably been rehearsed several times or the participants were put up to it by the program makers.

Let me tell you about one example of something that definitely wasn't exactly as it seemed:
A work colleague - Chris Stanley - and I were walking to work in Bristol one morning when a guy from the BBC asked us whether we could spare a few minutes to take part in a recording. We were taken into an adjacent bar (which wasn't open to the public at that time in the morning) where we were asked to comment on "World At Your Feet", the new England song for the 2006 World Cup. After some waiting around (there's always lots of waiting around), we were played a very brief part of the tune and asked for our comments. The person who interviewed us and presented the item portrayed us as being football fans who had been eagerly awaiting the new England World Cup song. However, this couldn't have been further from the truth. In fact, neither Chris nor I were football fans and neither of us knew or cared that the song was coming out. Amusingly, what we didn't realise was that the broadcast was going out live on Chris Moyles' Radio1 show, or that his studio guest was Danny McNamara from Embrace (the writer of the song). Chris's and my innocent comments provoked much laughter in the studio - in fact, Danny ended up crying with laughter. You may remember the original broadcast or the replays throughout the day on the BBC news. If not, you can hear more about it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biQu-ClcRTs or read about it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_at_Your_Feet

Was an alright show and was nice to see some different cars on the TV for a change. Jodie Kidd is a bit annoying but I will forgive her!
