lock/key number

I purchased my car (1970/71 1500)without keys. From what I read the keys should be FS series numbered locks and they can be cut from the code number. I have taken the door locks out looking for a code but can't find one, the ignition lock has a four digit number stamped on it, could this be the code? (or should it be a three digit code?) I can't open the boot to check that lock either. Does one key fit all locks doors, boot, glove box and petrol cap?

The numbers are very small on the boot lock and glove box. You may need a eye glass to see them.
I look out for keys at resto shows such as Stoneleigh

The car would have had a common key for glove box and boot of the FS style, and a further common key for door locks and ignition. I'm not aware of the ignition key number being recorded anywhere on the car itself, but the FS number will be stamped on the alloy casting of the glovebox lock. Open the glovebox and remove the single screw that secures the chrome retainer to the back of the lock and you'll be able to withdraw the lock from the lid; you should then be able to see the number. It is also stamped on the cam of the boot lock, but if the boot is locked you'll not be able to access that. I have access to the FS range of keys bar a few exceptions so should be able to supply you with the one you need hopefully. As to the ignition, keep an eye on ebay for someone selling a complete lock set....

I thought on early ones the ignition lock number matched the doors and was stamped on the n/s door lock.
I think its also possible to get a key made by some locksmiths if you take them the ignition lock.

Thanks for the replies guys, As the glove box is actually opened I will look for the code tomorrow (Tuesday). I am planning on going to Stoneleigh as it's not far away so hopefully be able to pick the door and ignition locks there. I might also see if it's possible to make a key from a blank by measuring how far the pins move..... or take the lock to a local locksmith
