The axle sheared at the back of the hub going into the tightest left corner at Pukekohe this afternoon. It first became lodged in the wheel arch causing the car or spin violently, nose down so when the rear landed it has caused quite a bit of damage. As it bounced up again the wheel was released, so here you see the car after it has done a 360 and the wheel bouncing away.

The wheel arch is now mostly in the spare wheel well, the floor of which is vertical half way across. The rear wing has been moved up with a bad crease it the back of the C pillar. Even the drivers door opening isn't square and is hard to open. Not sure at this point where to next.

A reminder to all who use their cars on the track that after 40 years, things can break. This was the 91st race meeting and was hoping to hit the 100. Not so sure any more.

Incredible photo Geoff. So the wheel getting wedged in the arch caused more damage Geoff. It's caused quite severe damage from your description :( . Hope you can sort it out and you can carry on racing.

Back on four wheels, if only a temporary fix, so off the trailer and onto the hoist. No more damage apparent underneath and all suspension mounts seem to be undamaged and still where they should be. I had missed that the top left corner of the rear screen had popped.

Been to a couple of trade recommended panelbeaters who both say that fixing is still a better / more cost effect option than a re-shell. Each reckoned that it would all pull back into shape easily on a jig. They are going away to work out an estimate. Finish will only be to race car standard rather than what would be expected for a good road car, but that is fine. Will have to see what numbers they come back with.

If all else fails, this looks tempting:

I race against a few of these and they never seem to have any issues. I still prefer the Sprint though and it is the only one racing in NZ and has been for a number of years!

I know I’m not ready to give up yet!

Reading your own post again tomorrow wil make you realize what you've just said. Being one of them instead of THE one with the dolomite sprint.

No, no, no :wary: :wary: :wary: :wary:
