My first Dolly..

This is actually my second car, my first being a gutted out Hillman Imp which I planned on restoring but never got around to doing it. After looking around for a bit I found this Dolomite quite local and decided that it would be my daily driver and then I would build the Imp into a rally car. I was surprised to find the Insurance to be not as much as I imagined, provisional was around £200 and on a full license it's around £1600, which was quite reasonable considering it being a 2L rear wheel drive saloon. I've already took it to an auto test which at first I thought could be a bit rough on it, but it preformed well all day. The only issue I've had was some overheating, however I thing that could have been to do with the 300 kitchen tiles I was hauling through traffic and up hills..
So Quite recently I picked up this '78 Sprint for a mere £1600. After driving it for a month on my provisional, I've come up with a bit of a list of things I'm gonna try and do.
I believe the first thing is going to be the engine and gearbox coming out as it's acquired a pretty bad whine as it's gets up to speed, The box will be sent and a reconditioned is going to be installed, meanwhile the engine is going to undergo a rebuild to make sure everything is all good. A trip meter and possibly some spot lights might be fitted as I'll be entering a few targa rallies in the future.

The auto test was pretty darn fun.. :D

I'm new to Dolly's so any advice would be pretty handy, when I get a start on the rebuild I'll follow it up with some updates. :)

Welcome to the forum.

The whine could be your differential. Get the back end up in the air, check your front wheels, run the car in gear and have a listen to the diff. I had a whining diff on my Dolomite 1300 and I fitted another axle which cured the problem.

Hi there, Hope it's alright to ask you who you insure with- i'm struggling to find insurance cheaper than that for my 1.3 :) Dolly's are great !

I'm pretty sure the quote with a full license was with GoGirl, I know.. :p But they insure males.. I found them through Go Compare.

Have you tried getting any quotes from the classic insurers? If you don't get any joy, you will have to bite the bullet. There are ways of reducing the quote but don't even consider anything remotely dodgy. Honesty is always the best policy even if it is at a price.

I've tried a few of the classic insurers- but not great luck to be honest, most say they won't insure me until I age a bit or get a second car.

I think Dave meant to say that you should chock your front wheels. However, I'm trying to avoid an accident not just being picky over Dove's spoiling.

Yes, it was a typo on my part. You do need to chock your front wheels.
