What do i need to fit mgf alloys

Hi, upgrading my rear brakes to discs using sierra cosworth calipers and sprintspeed bracket and handbrake cables.

I will need bigger wheels, so the 15 inch MGF ones seem to be a good choice.

What will i need in the way of wheel nuts and studs?
Do i need to upgrade the studs or can i get nuts that would fit a sprint?

Ian on my sprint I bought a set just as a way of keeping it rolling until the originals are ready. The hub centres very nicely but the hole on the wheels for the nut to sleeve into is too big on the mgf wheels. This means although fitted when the nuts are not quite tight the wheels can rotate back and forth a bit. Mine are 3/8 studs if that makes a difference. Not sure what others do but a fatter sleeve on the nut is the answer. The thread engagement is ok though. HTH

Interesting. I have a mix of 3/8ths and 7/16's studs on the back and front hubs respectively. Don't think this would matter as the nut sleeve is the same diameter. Perhaps a bespoke sleeve would do the job.


My car pushes out 200bhp though, so an alternative uprated solution might be the way to go. I have heard freelander m12 studs can be fitted?

Anyone know of this solution.

Do fit the big studs. Really, it is a simple mod and makes you feel safer. For good reason. Then get nuts with a 60degree taper to suit the studs you are using.

To keep it simple, you may be able to get some 7/16 studs? I used ford m12 studs, but I needed a bit of weld to stop them pushing out. On that basis ford 7/16 may be suitable?

No need for tapered nut, the wheel is flat like a Sprint wheel.

Ok, i thought mgf wheel nuts had a 60 degree angle though.

Yes sorry Im wrong looking at pics of mgf on ebay. Maybe I picked up on the flat part of the wheel nut. If angled nuts are needed its job done then.

Ah! I see what you mean now. I'm thinking i have a couple of options now. Change 3/8's studs on rear hubs to 7/16's (ford maybe) and the use 60 degree 7/16's unf nuts (available on ebay). Or covert all studs to m12 pitch 1.5 and use standard mgf nuts!

M12 studs would be a bit of work at first but easier for choices later.

You will also need to roll the rear arch lips (if you haven't already) to clear the outside edges of the tyres. I also find that 195/50/15 tyres all round is the most practical size to use, rather than 185/55 front and 205/50 rear which is what MGFs wear. I use all Sprint hubs with 7/16 studs and nuts with a 60 degree tapered washer, these came from ebay marked for MkI Escort, £24 for a set of 16.

Hi Steve, yes 195 would seem best for me. I dont really want to roll the arches if i can get away with it. Just need to find some suitable 7/16 studs for the rear. Great that i can get nuts cheap!

You might get away with not rolling the arches, thinking about it, my car is a Toledo which has slightly narrower arches from the different body style and i sort of got away with running 205s in lipped arches for about a year with only occaisional graunches! This was mainly when cornering hard when the original rubber hung axle would move somewhat in the body and bring on contact. Now it's polybushed, Gaz'd, lowered and rolled arches and all is fine (and I'm much more confident pushing my luck)

I am going to go with escort 7/16 unf studs and fit then to the rear hubs. I have 7/16 studs on the front. Then some 60 degree 7/16 nuts to suit.

Probably go with 55mm length ones and cut then down if i need to.

That sounds reasonable. I don't know whether the Escort stud shanks will match the Dolly hubs or not but I guess there is one good way to find out! What I DO know is that genuine Sprint 7/16 studs are NLA which is one reason why everyone makes so much fuss about it!

When I fitted the ford m12 studs (same splines as the earlier 7/16 IIRC) I needed to file a flat on each one. But that may have been just for the front. But be aware!
