Is it possible to replace a chassis leg without taking the engine out.?

You'd have to drop the subframe out to do it. You could leave the engine on the sub frame, but that is 'engine out' I guess. I doubt you'd be able to drop just one side enough to weld in a new leg.

It's not much work to drop the lot out, just disconnect wiring, hoses and support frame on blocks of wood or something (so it doesn't smack into the ground when you undo the mounts), then lift front of car off it with an engine crane.

The subframe will have to be removed to get access to the chassis leg. It is possible to leave the engine in situ by hanging it on an engine support beam.

Not sure I'd want my head under it whilst welding :s

It is perfectly safe provided the engine is properly supported.

Hmmm.......

Rather than suspend it, I support the engine on wooden blocks (cut down railway sleepers).

when i did my car, subframe removed i use 3x3(75mmx75mm) fence post and 4 pairs of welding glove, layed the fence post across both wings and used the gloves as packers along the egde of wings/inner wings and rested the gearbox on axles stand,,,,no damage to wings
but if your welding a chassis leg, best bet is to remove the engine and gearbox completely to take as much weight of it
but its all down to you how you wont to tackle this job you`ve got...hope it helps :bluewave:
