Hot Coil

#1 Post by series111 »

:? Hi All

After going for a drive at the weekend I noticed that my coil on my Sprint was hot (just about touchable),so yesterday I checked out the wiring and coil readings and it all seem in order, but why is the coil getting hot.

It is a Lumenition MS3 Mega spark 3 ballast resistor coil with its own ballast resistor, which is wired from the ignition side of the fuse box to the b/r and from the b/r to the positive side of the coil, and also the 12v feed from the starter motor as per wiring diagram,

It also has a Piranha Electronic ignition which is also wired as per wiring diagram, except that the earth wire is run through a switch and on to earth connection, this is used to disable the ignition (anti theft).

Would it make any difference if I disconnected the 12v feed from the starter motor, as this is now a straight wire from motor to coil or could the switch be causing the problem

Any ideas will be helpful.

The wire on the starter is only live (or should be) while cranking so it shouldnt be the problem. Disconnect it while running the engine and see if it stops the engine running. If it was live all the time it would overheat the coil as it wouldnt go through the resistor.
