Any idea what these are?

#1 Post by PaulB »

Hi

This afternoon, I removed the Powr-lock diff unit from the axle casing. Needs new bearing etc.

I found these lying in the bottom of the casing:-

I think they probably go in the centre of the LSD and space off the two drive shafts. It looks as though they might have been held in place by a roll pin which has now failed, so they have become seperated and fallen out.

Am I correct? Any suggestions?

Also how do you dismantle the LSD unit?

I dont know what they are sorry but the lsd stripdown will start with removing the crownwheel then behind that you should see a couple of screws (usually tapered phillips) that holds the 2 halves together. If when you undo them the casing starts to part put it in a press or vice so the screws can be undone easily then release the press (or vice) and carefully lay it on its end. Then remove the cap youve just undone and pull the bits out IN ORDER :)

I think you are correct Paul, they are what the half shafts butt up against...

I have an identical photo of those two small parts after mine failed in 2006, right down to the broken roll pin. Yes, you are correct in where they go. The roll pin was really there just to hold in place during assembly.

I bought my LSD from Philip at Sprintparts in Oz and they supplied replacement plates etc. They may be able to assist if you need parts and they are not available in the UK. They may be able to offer advice but I think these are very similar in construction to other plate type diffs as used in Escorts etc.
Mine was set up with a preload of 90-100 ft lb of torque.

I know that 3Jdriveline in the UK are now making a new LSD for TR6 (which I understand is same as Sprint diff) so they may also be helpful.

How to............

#5 Post by gmsclassics »

Just found the old email from Philip at Sprintparts telling me the process of dismantling and reassembling / setting up the LSD unit.

"Firstly remove the roll pin from the thrust block and fit a new pin. I can't remember the length, but something around 1/2" -5/8" should do. It is only to hold the two halves together for assembly so whatever length you can readily source.
The LSD centre should be stripped and washed out. From our own experience it more than likely it will have metal inside it.
To strip the LSD centre remove the 3 screws round the outer flange, the
housing should then split.
Remove the internals and wash them.
Re-assemble exactly as it was dismantled. i.e. shims and plates in the same sequence
Refit the 3 screws and there should be no problems

Yes the LSD unit does need to be set up.
We use a dummy axle in one side of the LSD to hold it in a vice and then use a second unit with a nut welded to it and a torque wrench to determine the slip torque. For a race car you need to start with something like 85- 100 ft lb.
The torque can be varied by adding (or removing) shims between the housing halves."

Hope this helps
Geoff
