Have had my Dolly for almost 3 months, Changed the transmission fluid and only a couple of litres came out and I replaced it with ATF-G after good advice on here! Since then I have found some receipts in service history for transmission fluid containing Dexron which I understand is a big no no! So dropped it again today and once again 2.5 litres came out, not as Brown as before but certainly not cherry red! So my question is, is this the right way to go to get it all refreshed, or is it easier to drop sump, replace gasket etc? Today when I removed sump plug nothing came out until i used a hook tool to poke the hole, is there a magnet or something in the sump that may have been obstructing the drain hole? Have done a few miles this afternoon and looks good level wise and is a very healthy looking red on dipstick, but I'm presuming a lot of fluid will be in Torque converter regardless of whether I drop sump or not?
Cheers Rich..

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
You will probably have to do 4 drain/refills with use in between to be sure of getting rid of the old fluid because you can't drain the converter. If you knew the capacity, and what comes out on each drain, you could calculate how many times you would need to do it. Removing the sump won't make enough difference to what comes out to make that worthwhile. There should be a magnet inside.

Ok Thanks, was probably magnet blocking drain hole then hopefully. Sounds like perseverance is the key here then.harvey wrote:You will probably have to do 4 drain/refills with use in between to be sure of getting rid of the old fluid because you can't drain the converter. Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
I notice that Rimmers sell Comma ATF which conforms to Dexron II, it says nothing about do not use in Stags, Dolomites etc. perhps they should be told?
I did find an interesting article on the Rover P6 website about not using Dexron in the BW 65 gearbox.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
Dexron is an absolute no-no. The correct Comma fluid is the AQF but anything that is Ford M2C-33G spec is right for the BW65. This is what I used the last time I changed my transmission fluid.

It looks like you were lucky if your fluid remains clean. As Harvey as said, it will take about 4 fluid changes to completely flush the transmission because there will be still some fluid in the torque converter once the transmission has been drained.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
Yeah thats the ATF-G I ordered after your advice when I first got my Dolly, the fluid I dropped yesterday was not cherry Red but wasn't Brown either I did smell it and to me didn't smell burned, although I've not had any experience with dodgy Transmission fluid before! Does 2.5 litres sound about right for fluid change each time I flush it out?Toledo Man wrote:Dexron is an absolute no-no. Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
I don't know how fluid much will come out when the transmission is drained (Harvey will probably know being the forum's resident autobox guru). If there's no burnt smell and the fluid stays clean then the clutches and brake bands will probably be fine.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid
It's difficult to say, but if you buy 5 litres, then you could drain into a container marked at 2.5 litres, stopping the drain when it gets to the mark, and you would get two drain/refills out of the five litres for certain. If it doesn't drain 2.5 litres then put back what comes out and you'll have some left over.RJF_70 wrote:Does 2.5 litres sound about right for fluid change each time I flush it out?
