I was working at a BL dealership when the SD1s came out with the LT77 Box The reason the change was made to ATF was to cure a problem which was that, when running on hypoid oil, it was almost impossible to get 2nd gear when cold! I have run Moggy minor boxes on ATF with good results and also the B series box in my ZA Magnette but I'm not sure how an overdrive unit would respond to it.Jon Tilson wrote:Indeed so Jeroen....
MGB/cambridge boxes and all the transverse stuff runs quite happily on engine oil.
SD1 LT77 boxes started life on 75 weight and then moved to ATF.
I've often wondered about running a Sprint box on ATF...

Re: gear box oil
Interesting...
The USP of ATF is consistent viscosity across a wide temperature range...which is why a lot like it for SU damper top ups too.
I cant see it damaging an overdrive. The cone clutch linings would surely be similar to the clutch packs in an auto box I'd have
thought.

Re: gear box oil
That's the point, I don't KNOW how an O/D unit would react to ATF and its a bit of an expensive thing to gamble with!
Theory says it should be fine, as you say, the clutches are much the same as those in an autobox. Most autos now have oil coolers, which would be complicated or impossible to rig on a manual, but I think an O/D box would run cooler than an auto, much less heat generating slip involved. Try it if you like, Jonners, I'd like to know if it works! (I don't have a working overdrive car here to try it on anyway!)

Re: gear box oil
When I first had a Sprint OD gearbox rebuilt many years ago, I was advised to only ever use a Castrol product called VMX 80w. I don't know whether this is specific to Australasia or available elsewhere. The spec says:
A manual transmission fluid of advanced design especially developed to provide easier gear changes over a wide temperature range. It should be used in manual transmissions of most car and light commercial vehicles (LCV’s) requiring GL-4 performance, where improved low temperature shift performance is required.
I covered many thousands of miles using this without any issue.
I use Redline MT90 synthetic gear oil in the race car gearboxes (close ratio non overdrive and standard with overdrive). That is still GL4 specification.
For rear axles I've found Valvoline Gear Oil to be excellent. It is SAE 90 and conforms to both GL5 and 6 specifications. It is also available in a LS variant for use with LSDs.
Hope this helps.
