Gearbox oil leak (sprint)

#1 Post by cliftyhanger »

Well, I suspect it is from the gearbox. To be precise the front oil seal.
I have a vain hope it is just a blocked breather. But where is the breather on a sprint OD box?
It may save me having to pull the box out (but my hopes are not that high)
Thanks

Breather? What breather?

Box out....they go all the time.

Really? I thought all gearboxes (like axles) had a breather somewhere! This is a first!
I had a nagging feeling it may be on the OD...still, gearbox will get pulled in the near future.

The breather on a sprint box is just a small hole at the front of the remote/top cover. If you stand a box on its bell housing oil leaks out and a rivet shank fits it to hold the oil back.

Ah, so there is one!
I will investigate. I thought there should be, otherwise the box will pressurise when it warms up.

See attached viewtopic.php?f=19&t=22925&start=105#p235229

Red arrow points to the breather hole.

Ta. Found it. Not blocked.
Oh well, new seals for the box (and just in case crank rear too) on the way.
On the plus side apart from the broken windscreen the car is just about ready for the MoT. Yes, patchy/primer spots, yes, odd colour panels, yes, lack of carpets. But everything seems to be working now. (tried wipers the other day) so just waiting STILL to hear from autoglass.

If the box is coming out its probably worth checking spigot bush in the crank too.
