Are the two boxes interchangeable??

They might be interchangeable (the gearbox cases are the same) but you would need to match the clutch plate with the input shaft. The post '76 parts catalogue has different part numbers for the various single rail boxes. Also, the gear ratios are different.

A 1500 one with OD had come up on the bay!
Not much good as a spare for my 1850 thanks for clarifying

1850 and 1500 single rail boxes have different ratios but the o/d step up is the same..
